When she received her diploma from the Warsaw theater school in 1988, she was already well known to viewers. She made her debut on the small screen a year earlier in the cult “River of Lies” directed by Jan Łomnicki. Her role in the series brought her not only incredible popularity and sympathy from viewers, but also recognition from critics who unanimously hailed her as the hope of Polish cinema.
Her film debut opened the door for Trzepiecińska to an international career. She had previously refused this role
In the following years, she appeared in productions by such artists as Janusz Kijowski, which quickly made her one of the most sought-after Polish actresses. Directors offered her roles, and she carefully chose those in which she could prove herself the most.
The world is open to her
– Witold Filler in the book “New group of Polish actors”. And so it really was. Trzepiecińska could choose roles and often rejected offers that even much more experienced stars could only dream of. This was also the case in 1991, when Krzysztof Lang offered her a role in the Polish-British comedy “Paper Marriage” alongside Gary Kemp himself. At first she refused, causing considerable consternation in the community. – I have to play there with Kemp, but I prefer to play with Kemp here – she explained at the time. She didn’t want fame, but the opportunity to work with the best in her field, and she hoped to meet them in the theater. – Theater is the only place where I have a chance to work with outstanding directors and wonderful colleagues. Here I can experience the best literature – she argued in “Gala”.
Trzepiecińska could have made a career in Hollywood. She consciously gave up this chance. Why?
Ultimately, after much persuasion, she accepted the role, and her debut on the big screen opened the door to the world of film also outside the country. Proposals came to her not only from various corners of Europe, but also from the United States. Although she could have acted alongside such Hollywood stars as John Hurt, Rod Steiger or Rutger Hauer, she always refused. She claimed that she preferred to focus only on projects in which she could demonstrate her skills by conveying some important value or thought. – There are really no quality criteria in cinema and television. The most important thing is that the production sells. There are no masters like Jan Łomnicki, for whom the most important thing is art, not money – she said in an interview for “Gala”.
She has never hidden the fact that she does not care about fame or publicity. She rarely participated in industry events, was reluctant to give interviews and avoided walls. She preferred to devote her free time from work to her sons, Wiktor and Karol, whom she raised alone after her divorce from the publicist Janusz Anderman. – I raised my boys alone because their father didn’t want to take care of them. The man I trusted, the man who was the father of my children, was not up to the task – she said in “Dzień Dobry TVN”, adding that it was undoubtedly the fault of patriarchal upbringing. Even though she lost the chance to pursue a career in her country irretrievably, and in her home country she did not achieve success up to her potential, she never regretted the decision she made. – I am just one of many actresses who simply work. Whatever I was supposed to succeed, I succeeded – she said in “Vivy”.
