The journalist couldn’t control the guests. A fight instead of a conversation: “Did you take your pills?”

On April 11, the Sejm debated the liberalization of abortion law in Poland, which is today one of the most conservative in Europe. The discussion on access to safe termination of pregnancy could also be followed on TV Republika, where Mi³osz Kłeczek invited Ma³gorzata Prokop-Paczkowska from the Left and Iwona Arent from the Law and Justice party to his program.

Knowing the programs of both parties, it was easy to predict that the conversation about abortion would be stormy and the host would be biased, which was confirmed already in the first minute of the discussion. It is worth noting, however, that despite Kłeczek’s views, the journalist decided to discuss women’s bodies with women, which, contrary to appearances, is still not standard even in the more liberal media.

A row instead of a discussion about abortion on Republika TV

Unfortunately, the journalist’s way of conducting the discussion did not deserve praise, as he assessed the guests’ views before they had a chance to say anything. Kłeczek welcomed female politicians and introduced them as people who represent two extremes: “defending life and defending hedonism and pleasure.” A representative of the Left immediately intervened and noted that she defended women’s lives and health.

Iwona Arent could not agree to these words and immediately explained that she also protects the lives and health of women, but does not forget about those who “are in their mother’s womb”. The discussion had barely started when things started to get tense in the studio. – You can deliver this moralizing from the pulpit or some other place – said a representative of the Left. “I’m not a priest,” Arent snapped.

When Prokop-Paczkowska was once again attacked by a journalist, she accused him of open bias. – As a journalist, do you think you should judge? You’re doing some work here. You are no longer on TVP Info, but on Telewizja Republika. We know that you are being biased here, said the representative of the Left. Kłeczek replied that he was not only a journalist, but also a human being, so he had the right to evaluate her views.

PiS MP on Republika TV: abortion is murder. Kłeczek talks about God

The MP from the Left said that Telewizja Republika is not a reliable station. – Then why do you come to an unreliable station? – asked the host of the program. – To increase your viewership – Prokop-Paczkowska replied. – You think that a child is an evil and a problem that needs to be gotten rid of – said Kłeczek, returning to the topic of discussion.

The tensions in the program did not end there. The presenter began to speculate that pregnancy is a miracle and life is a gift from God. The MP from the Left couldn’t believe that such arguments came from a journalist. The tension in the studio did not drop even for a moment. When Iwona Arent started talking about the “civilization of death”, with Kłeczka’s approval she called abortion “murder” and gesticulated vigorously, the Left MP lost her nerve and started imitating Arent’s movements.

When emotions reached their peak, the PiS MP started mocking and stigmatizing people with mental disorders. – Are you okay? Have you taken all your pills? Because I have the impression that you function without pills. “You’re talking such nonsense,” Arent said.
