Death on film sets. Some tragic accidents happened more than once

Vic Morrow and two child actors, “The Twilight Zone” (1982)

One of the most tragic disasters in the history of cinema occurred on the set of the film. Vic Morrow and two child actors, Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen, died when the helicopter from which the scene was shot crashed on the ground as a result of the explosion of pyrotechnic effects. This tragic event caused controversy and changes in safety regulations on film sets.

Brandon Lee, “The Raven” (1993)

Brandon Lee’s tragic death on the set of the film was the result of an unfortunate coincidence when a real bullet was fired from a prop gun. Despite immediate attempts to save the actor’s life, Brandon Lee died from his injuries at the age of 28, just a few days before the scheduled end of filming.

Jon-Erik Hexum, “Dangerous Takes” (1984)

This actor also died due to the use of a gun on set. However, in this case, the mistake of putting real ammunition into the weapon was not repeated. The gun was loaded with the so-called blanks, which should not be dangerous when used properly… unless someone decides to shoot at the target from a very close distance. During a break between recording scenes, as a joke, the actor put the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. He suffered internal head injuries, fell into a coma for several days and eventually died.

Sarah Jones, “Midnight Rider” (2014)

Sarah Jones, an assistant cameraman, died on the set of “Midnight Rider” when the team was filming a scene on train tracks without proper safety measures. An oncoming train killed Jones and injured seven other people. Ultimately, the production of the film was canceled.

Halyna Hutchins, “Rust” (2021)

Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, died on the set of the film “Rust” after actor Alec Baldwin unknowingly fired a gun that, like in the case of Brandon Lee, was only supposed to be a prop on the set. Unfortunately, due to an error, the gun contained live bullets. To this day, the court case for Baldwin is not resolved.

Grzegorz Nowak, “Death like a Slice of Bread” (1994)

There was also a tragic accident in Polish cinematography. While filming a scene for the film “Śmierć jak kromka breada” directed by Kazimierz Kutz, an unfortunate incident occurred with the use of heavy equipment. Then, who was an extra on the set, he was hit by a water cannon blastwhich led to his death.
