Is the pit viper dangerous? Spring is its breeding season, so it can often be found in forests, fields and mountain pastures. We advise you how to behave in the event of unexpected contact with a snake. What to avoid and what to do best if bitten?

The zigzag adder is the only species of venomous snake found throughout Poland and we will be able to encounter it on our roads more and more often. This is due to the breeding season, when the activity of pit vipers is increased. Rarely can it attack a human on its own, but it can do so in two cases.

When can a pit viper attack us? Avoid these situations

The first time we should expect a pit viper to attack or bite is when it is intentionally accosted. During their period, these animals are more alert and therefore pose a greater danger. They won’t attack us themselves, but if we provoke them, they will definitely start defending themselves. The second situation is the feeling of danger, which may have various causes. When a pit viper feels threatened during the breeding season, it will certainly start to defend itself. In spring, it is best to keep a safe distance.

Is the pit viper’s venom poisonous? Follow these rules

Most often, the snake’s flesh is dry, meaning it does not contain venom. However, if we are bitten with a poisonous liquid added, it poses a real threat to our health and life. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine what type of bite occurred. Only a doctor can make this diagnosis. Therefore, any bite should be treated seriously, wash it with soap and water, cover it lightly with sterile gauze and go to the hospital for help as soon as possible. The wound should not be pressed, burned or, in any case, the venom should be sucked out of it, as this will have an effect opposite to the desired improvement.

The venom of the pit viper is a mixture of toxins with various effects: it can cause tissue necrosis, reduce blood clotting and damage the nervous system. In such a situation, you should seek help from a doctor or paramedic as soon as possible, who will inject horse antivenom, which is an antidote to viper venom.
