The Harry Potter star has Jewish roots. “I have never been so ashamed of Israel”

Miriam Margolyes is one of the few Jewish voices who dare to publicly criticize Israel’s actions in Gaza. The actress known for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film series belongs to the Jewish community that does not agree to the type of warfare we can observe in Palestine. The Harry Potter actress speaks out about Israel’s actions

Miriam Margolyes recorded a lengthy statement that was published on social media by the Jewish community in Australia. The actress did not hold back – she used an argument related to Hitler and sharply described what she thought about Israel’s current actions.

My name is Miriam Margolyes. I am an Australian citizen. I am 83 years old and I have never in my life been as ashamed of Israel as I am now. I feel like Hitler won. He turned us, Jews, from beings full of care and compassion for others, doing to others as we would want done to us, into a treacherous, genocidal and nationalistic nation, hunting down and killing women and children.

Of course I condemn the actions of Hamas, there is no doubt about it. But what we are doing, what the Jews in Israel are doing, is shocking, embarrassing and sick. And I cannot understand why no one among the entire Jewish nation, especially among synagogue members, is demanding an immediate end to what is happening there. In the name of humanity, I call on all Jews – shout, beg for a cease fire.

It is not anti-Semitism to have a different opinion about current hostilities. We all, as my mother used to say, must do our part – and that is to hold our fire and stop the killing, to plead and insist for the release of the hostages. This is an opinion on Israel’s actions, not an anti-Semitic voice. What Israel is doing is sick.

It is also very bad for Israel. Please talk to your rabbis, to your communities, to people you know. Express your disgust at Israel’s actions. Please. Only in this way will you behave in accordance with Jewish tradition.

Miriam Margolyes also has Polish roots. Her ancestors moved from the areas of modern Poland and Belarus to Great Britain, where the actress was born. However, she has been an Australian citizen since 2013. In addition to numerous film, theater and comedy roles, for which she was awarded, among others: BAFTa, is known for her very sharp language and statements bordering on good taste.

Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip follow the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel last October. Hamas then massacred the civilian population – 1,200 people died and it also took over 250 hostages, many of whom are still in captivity. After a few days, Israel began a brutal retaliatory action, which, according to various estimates, has already killed more than 30,000 Palestinians. In the Gaza Strip, civilian targets, hospitals and refugee camps are also attacked. Israel explains the attacks by the presence of terrorists in given places. . Seven workers of an international humanitarian organization and a Palestinian driver were killed.
