The doctors offered the actor only symptomatic treatment, which is not intended to cure the patient, but to improve the patient’s quality of life at a given stage of the disease. Fortunately, Stuhr did not give up and sought support from other specialists.
– Doctors made some serious mistakes when treating me. For example, at one point they decided that I was a palliative case and the best they could do was help me die with dignity. They placed stents in my esophagus. Then I went to Gliwice for oncological treatment. And they ask: “How can we give you radiotherapy if you have tubes inside?” – the actor reported in an interview quoted by Fakt.pl.
The actor’s tubes were removed, a major operation was performed, which was successful, and proper cancer treatment could begin. Jerzy Stuhr recovered, but in 2023 his son Maciej revealed that his dad was hospitalized again.
Stuhr recovered, but gave up theater and teaching
The actor talked about the return of the cancer in an interview with “Newsweek”. – Recurrence is a common occurrence in cancer. But I endured. I have exactly the same problem as Ziobro. The same cut – Stuhr reported in an interview with Aleksandra Pawlicka. – I feel sorry for him because I was lying on the same bed. And I know what it is. I know how it hurts. I know what it’s like to not be able to raise your hand, to not be able to stand up. I was in the ICU for almost three weeks, he added.
Despite his serious illness and the actor’s powerlessness, he never lost hope for recovery. – I was just thinking about how many more steps today? Where will I get to? To the bathroom or to the reception? Will I be able to use the walker on my own? I am seasoned in diseases. Apparently I have a strong body that I can endure all this – Jerzy Stuhr reports from the hospital stay.
Although the actor’s strength has returned and he is still working, he decided to give up some activities. In February 2024, he announced that he was saying goodbye to his work at the university, and also noted that his role in “Genius” by Tadeusz Słabodzianek would be the last in his theater career.
