Grzegorz Wawrzyszak founded it together with Sławomir Wesołowski and Mariusz Zabrodzki as a 22-year-old. – We landed at Mariusz’s house and started looking for compositions in his drawer that would be most suitable. We chose two: “Around the World in 40 Days” and “A Gross Foul”. We went into the studio with them to record them. And this is how our band was created in 1984. I, Sławek Wesołowski and Mariusz Zabrodzki were there – he said. In the same year, the band recorded two songs in the studio of Radio Trójka. The singles “Around the world in 40 days” and “Ordynarny foul” were released in 1984. Subsequent hits, recorded in the Tonpress studio, consolidated the group’s position on the music market. In 1985, Kostek Joriadis and Krzysztof Kasprzyk joined the band. In the summer, the band performed at the Opole Festival.
During the “Premieres” concert, the group performed the song “Postcard from the Holidays”. To put it mildly, not everyone liked the performance. The musicians were accused of not being able to play live and that the singer was faking it. Regardless of the reasons for the unsuccessful performance, the members of Papa Dance blamed Grzegorz Wawrzyszak. The singer had been in conflict with Sławomir Wesołowski for some time, as he recalled in Plejada.

The decision was inevitable and ultimately the musician left Papa Dance. Tadeusz Łyskawa and Marek Karczmarczyk also left the band. The three of them formed a new band, Ex-Dance. Wawrzyszak tried to return to the stage several more times, but none of the projects was successful. The new vocalist of Papa Dance was the one with whom the band is still associated to this day. In 1986, Kostek Joriadis left the band. Papa Dance broke up in the 1990s, but went through several more storms in the following years. In the early 2000s, the idea of a comeback appeared. The musicians even approached Grzegorz Wawrzyszak with a proposal to join. – I didn’t want to participate in something like that – he said honestly. A few years later, a case regarding the rights to the name came to court.
Today, Paweł Stasiak performs in Papa D., but the Papa Dance Legends band is also present on the stage. In 2023, information appeared that Joriadis and Wawrzyszak wanted to reactivate the band. They also announced the release of a new album. This somewhat surprised some fans, who were convinced that Papa Dance was still active on the music market. The conflict between the members continues. “Around the World in 40 Days” was released in October 2023, and the vinyl includes both old hits in a refreshed version and new compositions.
The group will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2024. – The songs are slightly rearranged to be more in line with modern times, but they do not stray too far from the original – on Radio Eska. – I have no regrets – he summed up the conflict that caused him to leave the band.
