Remigiusz Mróz was chosen by 5.6 percent. readers, i.e. people declaring reading at least one book a year. Author, among others, series about Chyłka and Forst commented on these results on social media:
When in 2017 I appeared in the ranking of the most read authors behind Sienkiewicz and King, I was sure that it was some absurd, isolated smile of fate that I would remember for the rest of my life as the most beautiful moment of my writing career. When in 2018 I landed in second place, overtaking my literary mentor and placing behind the prophet, I was already sure that something like that would not happen again, because I had exhausted my luck. It seemed unrealistic to me that any living Polish author was at the top – such things simply did not make sense. What about me? “Not only impossible, but also completely ridiculous,” he began.
Remigiusz Mróz is back on top. The dream continues
He later describes what he thought when he came in first place the following year. He was convinced that it was “an ordinary mistake, a statistical error, a joke by someone from the National Library, about which they forgot to warn me. And even though since then I have been occupying this place in some incomprehensible way, every year I have exactly the same thoughts – and what a year before the results of the ‘State of Reading’ were announced, it seems to me that now I will suddenly wake up from this incredibly beautiful, unreal dream,” he wrote, adding that “this dream” still lasts, and he thanks the people who reach for it books.
The National Library has been conducting systematic book reading research for over three decades. In the fall of 2023, 2,012 Poles over the age of 15 took part in the study, answering 20 questions. It turned out that the same three people remained at the top of the readership as a year earlier: Mróz, Harlan Coben and Katarzyna Bonda. All three are contemporary authors of crime stories and/or thrillers, whose books are often adapted into films. Only the late Agatha Christie came in fourth place.
