“Tusk’s changes in the public media are fuel for the Polish Fox News” – this is the title of the article from “”, in which the situation in the media in Poland was analyzed for the needs of foreign readers. The sudden increase in interest in TV Republika was mentioned several times, and it was compared to Fox News in terms of its aspirations.
Financial Times. TV Republika like “Polish Fox News”?
The comparison of Republika TV to the Polish Fox News, one of the main American news television stations, did not come out of nowhere. They were suggested to the authors of the Financial Times text by the station’s program director himself. Former TVP employee, , . In an interview with the Financial Times, he admitted that Fox News is a role model for him. He mentioned, among others: Roger Ailes, who headed the American station and turned it into a Republican bastion.
We knew that a moment would come in Poland when we would be able to create something like this [jak Fox News – przyp. red.]. When we are dealing with a situation in which a large part of the electorate is not represented in the media, it creates an opportunity for those who understand how this business works – says Rachoń in an interview with “FT”.
Since the 2000s, Fox News has moved away from objectivity and toward a Republican way of describing the world. The station is accused of deepening America, which is already divided into two camps.
Rachoń did not mention the dark side of the former head of Fox News. It was Roger Ailes who was the villain of the film “Hot Topic”, which described what went on behind the scenes of the programs under Ailes’ supervision. The man harassed female employees, offered positions for sex, and fired those who did not agree. As a result of the accusations, Ailes resigned from his position.
“Financial Times” about difficult times for TVP
The Financial Times also included a description of the situation in TVP. It was noted that the change in public media meant the removal of people “promoted and indicated by PiS” and “the reinstatement of previous TVP employees.” “One of Tusk’s first decisions as prime minister was to remove right-wing employees from TVP, who were heavily promoted by the previous government,” we read in “FT”.
The article also pointed out the problems of the new authorities of Telewizja Polska. Moving away from sarcastic, controversial materials in favor of greater objectivity and calming narratives resulted in a significant drop in viewership. Viewers, accustomed to one type of narrative, went looking for it elsewhere – because TVP stopped providing it, the niche was taken over by TV Republika, which not only strengthened the already one-sided narrative, but also proposed a schedule modeled on the former TVP.
