She made her stage debut in 1941 at the underground Rhapsodic Theater in Kraków. Premieres were performed in private apartments, and the theater continued to operate after the war. She was associated with Krakow theaters for many years and was also a lecturer at the Krakow State Theater School. She made her screen debut in 1958 in the film “Ashes and Diamonds”. However, she took her first steps in the profession when she was still at school. It was then that she met Karol Wojtyła.
Halina Kwiatkowska and Karol Wojtyła met at a junior high school in Wadowice. “He didn’t let me copy his assignments”
They went to school together, although not in the same class. She went to a girls’ high school, he to a boys’ high school. However, they acted together in the school theater. – I was friends with Karol Wojtyła, and then the Holy Father, for 72 years – she said in 2020, which was conducted on the occasion of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Karol Wojtyła’s birth. As Kwiatkowska recalled years later, Karol Wojtyła was liked at school, “even though he didn’t let me copy his assignments.” However, he was always willing to explain difficult issues to his colleagues. – They sat in a corner somewhere and he taught him – she revealed.
In an interview with Kwiatkowska, she mentioned that they also took part in recitation competitions. During one of them, Wojtyła recited Norwid’s “Promethidion”. Ultimately, the future pope received the second prize. First place, for the poem “The autumn rain” by Staff, was taken by Halina Kwiatkowska. – Years later, I often visited the Vatican. Karol, who remembered that competition, good-naturedly shook his finger at me and said, “You beat me then,” she said.
After the war, Halina Kwiatkowska developed her acting career. The Pope “made a bigger career”
After graduating from high school in 1938, they both began studying Polish at the Jagiellonian University. During the war, they worked in the Rhapsodic Theater. – It helped him a lot to speak in a simple, true way, with a well-developed voice and impeccable diction. During this period, when we were talking to these viewers sitting in the living room, he learned to have a wonderful contact with the audience of the world – in one of the interviews. Apart from Kwiatkowska and Wojtyła, Krystyna Ostaszewska, Mieczysław Kotlarczyk and Danuta Michałowska also performed in the Rhapsodic Theater. – He, so to speak, had the greatest career among us – she admitted.
Halina Kwiatkowska, apart from her acting career in film and appearances in performances directed by, among others, by Mieczysław Kotlarczyk, Konrad Swinarski and Zygmunt Hübner, she also appeared on cabaret stages and in the Polish Radio Theater. Above all, she was a teacher. She was a lecturer at the PWST in Krakow for over 30 years. She died on November 12, 2020.
