Instead of going to the Spanish islands, it is worth considering our native island of Wolin as a holiday destination. It is a wonderful place with picturesque and many tourist trails. Everyone will find something for themselves here.

What is the Underground City on Wolin Island? This is a place with a unique history

Wolin is a coastal island in the Baltic Sea. It is the largest island in Poland, and on its territory there are towns such as Międzyzdroje, Wisełka, and Międzywodzie. Its area is as much as 265 km², and in the past it was one of the most important points on the military map. It’s right here the Underground City of Wolin is located, which was created in 1936-1939. It is a complex of shelters in Świnoujście, which was intended to strengthen the defense of the naval port, but today it is a popular tourist attraction.

Interestingly, an atomic attack was about to begin in the shelters. — On a signal, appropriate people were to arrive there, including Russian generals, and it was from there that the atomic holocaust was to begin. The instructions for the operation were in envelopes hidden in safes. It was recorded there, among others: an order to bomb strategic targets with small and medium-sized atomic charges, i.e. atomic bombs – Piotr Piwowarczyk, director of the Coastal Defense Museum in Świnoujście.

Wolin Island also has plenty of attractions. One of the most popular, next to the sandy beaches and the sea, is the Gosań viewpoint, the highest cliff in Poland, as well as the Turquoise Lake, which is surrounded by hills and , and owes its name to its beautiful color. It is also worth visiting the observation deck in Grodzisk Lubin, from where there is a view of the Szczecin Lagoon. Attention is also drawn to the bison show pen and the Wolin National Park, where you will find many tourist routes, including the Kikut lighthouse and Koprowo Lake.
