Birch water: properties

What are its characteristics? The properties of this substance result from its rich composition. This valuable extract is obtained from a tree that is very popular in Poland. Birch sap is collected from trees that are at least 10 years old, it is best to do it at the turn of March and April. Unprocessed birch sap is a very unstable liquid, it does not contain any preservatives, so it spoils within a few days – it can be consumed for a maximum of four days. Therefore, alcohol is often added to it, creating a solution called birch water. The composition of birch water includes:

  • B vitamins;
  • vitamin C;
  • Folic acid;
  • salicylic acid;
  • malic acid;
  • citric acid;
  • minerals (including iron, potassium, zinc, calcium, copper, magnesium);
  • amino acids;
  • tannins;
  • flavonoids;
  • phytosterols;
  • phytohormones;
  • saponins;
  • botulinum.

Due to its composition, birch water can be used both orally and externally on the skin. When administered orally, thanks to the presence of antioxidants, it slows down the body’s aging processes. It regulates lipid metabolism and helps maintain proper cholesterol levels in the blood, thus preventing the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. It has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties. It has a positive effect on the functioning of the nervous system. It has diuretic properties, soothes inflammation and irritation of the stomach and intestines, and has a beneficial effect on the digestive system. It can be administered as an aid in the treatment of angina; thanks to the presence of saponins, it has an expectorant effect, increases mucus secretion and supports the treatment of cough. In addition, birch water supports the immune, joint and muscle systems. For its consumption to bring positive effects, it should be drunk two or three times a day for at least a month.

Birch water for hair: how to use?

In cosmetics, birch water is especially recommended for . How to use this substance to bring the greatest benefits? Because birch water improves the condition of hair, adds fluffiness, volume and shine, and also has an anti-dandruff effect, it is recommended primarily in the form of a hair lotion. It is worth taking advantage of the beneficial properties of birch water in the care of normal hair, hair prone to falling out, weakened and prone to excessive oiliness. When applied to the scalp, it strengthens hair bulbs, promotes hair growth, reduces the problem of excessive hair loss, and helps fight recurring dandruff. Thanks to the content of salicylic acid, it helps to get rid of the problem of excessively greasy hair.

It is best to rub it into the scalp once or twice a week for four weeks and leave it for a few hours, and then wash it with a delicate shampoo. You can also massage it into the scalp with your fingertips immediately after washing your hair, and then proceed to drying and styling, or leave your hair to dry on its own – in this case, do not rinse off the birch water lotion. It is important not to use it more often or longer, as it may lead to excessive drying of the scalp. However, if we are not fans of lotions, we can use hair care cosmetics containing birch extract, especially anti-dandruff shampoos.

Birch water for facial care

Birch water can also be used for facial care. Thanks to the content of salicylic acid, birch water has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and exfoliating properties, refreshes and cleanses the skin, unclogging and narrowing pores. In turn, due to the vitamin C content, birch water protects the skin against free radicals and UV radiation. When used regularly, it has a moisturizing effect, smoothes fine wrinkles and brightens discolorations. In addition, birch water helps regulate sebum secretion. For this reason, it is recommended for the care of oily and combination skin, it will also work well for acne-prone skin, closing open pores, protecting them against clogging and preventing the formation of new imperfections on the face.

People with mature skin can also drink birch water, as it is an antidote to problems with the first signs of skin aging. People with discolored skin will also be satisfied, because birch water will eliminate the visibility of spots, scars and discolorations. It is worth using this product instead of a tonic, after thoroughly cleansing the skin, before applying a serum or moisturizing cream. You can also choose cosmetics containing birch water.
