“Happy Easter!”, or a few words about Easter wishes in the past and today

“Happy Easter!” – these are the wishes we make to each other while celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. The tradition of exchanging Easter wishes is very long and its form has changed over the years. How do we wish each other Easter today and what did it look like a few/dozen years ago?

Happy Easter – wishes from spring carolers

In the past, in Podlasie, wishes for Merry Christmas were made during spring carol singing, i.e. walking with a hemp candle. Spring caroling is a tradition that involved a group of bachelors (the so-called company) gathering and visiting nearby farms. During such meetings, Easter songs were sung and wishes were expressed to the hosts, for which gifts were received, such as Easter eggs, cake or bread. When the carolers did not receive a gift for their wishes, they played pranks and sang songs with bad omens for the farm.

The company wished not only a happy Easter, but also good harvest and prosperity to the hosts. If unmarried women lived in the houses visited, they were wished to get married soon. Moreover, it was a good opportunity for love courtship. Although the custom of spring caroling on a large scale disappeared several dozen years ago, on Easter Monday in Podlasie you can still meet carolers who aim to maintain the local tradition.

“Happy Easter” cards in various forms

Are you interested in Christmas cards? “Happy Easter”, “Happy Hallelujah”, “Wet Dyngus” – these are just some of the inscriptions that can be found on occasional Easter cards.

Sending greeting cards for various occasions was widely practiced a dozen or so years ago. Easter cards had to contain elements referring to the symbolism of the holiday. Religious Easter cards depicted the figure of the resurrected Christ with a flying banner. Easter cards also often featured a lamb – a symbol of Christ, as well as other elements typical of Easter, such as Easter eggs, Easter basket, Easter palm, Easter cake, boxwood twigs, catkins, yellow chickens and colorful spring flowers.

“Happy Easter” card prepared by yourself

Although we can still use ready-made patterns, the “Happy Easter” card can be prepared by us ourselves. This solution will work well when we want to distinguish someone and make them happy, but we cannot spend time together, e.g. because of the distance between us. It can also be, for example, a gift from grandchildren to grandparents. Preparing an Easter card with your children is a great opportunity to spend time together and talk about the traditions and symbolism of Easter.

To prepare an Easter greeting card, you can use easily available materials, such as colorful cardboard, tissue paper, paper and yarn. It must include the inscription “Happy Easter” and a handwritten signature. This form of gift will definitely make the recipient happy and make the holidays special.

Happy Easter – Easter wishes today

How do we most often wish ourselves “Merry Christmas” these days? Nowadays, we often make Easter wishes or wishes for various other occasions by phone or via instant messaging. Nowadays, we can make a video call to almost any place in the world. This is of great importance when, for various reasons, we cannot spend Easter together.

Interestingly, people used to write letters to each other and send cards with “Happy Easter” wishes, but today we more and more often reach for our phones and send Easter wishes in the form of e.g. GIFs. Easter wishes are also often sent via text messages or made during phone calls. However, the presence of Easter cards on store shelves in the pre-Christmas period proves that the traditional form of expressing wishes is still cultivated and finds its supporters. Nothing can replace a few warm words from a loved one with the note “Happy Easter”.
