“Mr. Kleks’ Academy” with another success. Few films since 1989 have managed to do this

“Mr. Kleks’ Academy” did great in cinemas. The filmmakers managed to achieve something that only a dozen or so productions did after 1989.

“Mr. Kleks’ Academy” exceeded the ceiling of 2.9 million viewers in Polish cinemas. This is no small feat. “This is the 16th film in statistics covering data after 1989 to achieve this feat,” says Box Office Report.

“Mr. Kleks’ Academy” better than “Barbie” and Vega’s films

Back in February, it turned out that more cinema tickets were sold in Poland for Maciej Kawulski’s film with Tomasz Kot in the title role than for “Barbie” – a real global film hit of recent months. At this point, according to Wikipedia, “Barbie” is in 17th place as the most watched films after 1989 in our country, and “Mr. Kleks’ Academy” is even in 14th place. Of course, both titles are far from first place.

Rounding out the top three is “Clergy” by Wojciech Smarzowski, which broke the bank with the result of 5.1 million in 2018, jumping onto the podium of the ranking, beating the much older “Quo Vadis” (Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s film premiered in 2001). In second place (6.1 million tickets sold) is the film adaptation of a school reading – “Pan Tadeusz” by Andrzej Wajda. This is a production from the 20th century – the premiere took place in 1999.

List of films with the largest number of viewers in Poland after 1989

The most watched film after 1989 is “With Fire and Sword” by Jerzy Hoffman. This year marks 25 years since the premiere of the production. And what does the fifteen productions look like according to data from Wikipedia?

  1. “With Fire and Sword” – 7.1 million viewers
  2. “Pan Tadeusz” – 6.1 million viewers
  3. “Clergy” – 5.1 million viewers
  4. “Quo vadis” – 4.3 million viewers
  5. “Avatar” – 3.67 million viewers
  6. “Avatar: The Water Creature” – 3.6 million viewers
  7. “Titanic” – 3.5 million viewers
  8. “Passion” – 3.4 million viewers
  9. “Shrek 2” – 3.39 million viewers
  10. “Shrek the Third” – 3.5 million viewers
  11. “Letters to M. 3” – 3 million viewers
  12. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” – 2.99 million viewers
  13. “Letters to M. 2” – 2.96 million viewers
  14. “Mr. Kleks’ Academy” – 2.9 million viewers
  15. “Pitbull. Dangerous Women” – 2.87 million viewers

This would make “Mr. Kleks’ Academy” the seventh Polish film in terms of the largest number of viewers in our country after 1989. It’s true that a lot of time has passed since the premiere, and there are fewer and fewer screenings, but maybe we can still increase it by one point? There is not much missing from “Letters to M. 2”.

It is also known that Maciej Kawulski is not done with Kleks yet. Simultaneously with the first part, he was shooting scenes for the sequel. A third part of the series is also planned.
