Who was bothered by shopping on Sunday? On Saturdays, people behave as if they were stocking up for six months

The Sunday trading ban, which was introduced in 2018, arouses many emotions and is often the subject of heated discussions. Our reader Dorota’s letter reminds us of this. – Who was bothered by shopping on Sunday? I always wonder about this when I’m at the store on Saturday. The crowds and queues at the checkouts that day are terrifying. And people are nervous and unpleasant – writes Dorota.

During the election campaign, the Civic Coalition announced the abolition of the Sunday trading ban introduced in 2018 by Law and Justice. As it was emphasized, despite this, each trade employee will be provided with two weekends off a month and double remuneration for work on days off. Now the topic is back. Our reader Dorota decided to share her opinion on this matter. With her consent, we are publishing the letter in its entirety.

People behave as if they were stocking up for at least six months

Who was bothered by shopping on Sunday? I always wonder about this when I’m at the store on Saturday. The crowds that day and the queues at the ticket offices are terrifying. And people are nervous and unpleasant. I witnessed fights several times. What’s funny is that on other days it’s much quieter. However, Saturdays are a real nightmare. Sometimes I get the impression that people behave as if they were stocking up for at least six months. But the stores won’t be open for just one day!

I think the previous solution was much better. I don’t work in the trade myself, neither do my relatives. However, my husband is a driver. It often happens that he does not have time off and has to work normally on Sunday. That’s why I don’t think these new rules are very fair. After all, not everyone rests on that day anyway. My husband often has to work and for this reason he doesn’t blame anyone or make a fuss. He just has another day off.

The previous solution was much more convenient for many people

I would like the previous rules to return. My observations show that for many people this solution was much more convenient. I don’t know if it did any good. I remember how politicians introducing a ban on Sunday trading claimed that it would allow us to spend time with our families. I don’t think that will happen. The truth is that if someone wants to spend time with their loved ones, they will find such an opportunity, regardless of their work schedule. At least that’s my experience.
