One of the most famous such cases was described by a local portal in mid-March 2024. In Okrzeszyn, a church from the 16th century, belonging to Janusz Palikot, is up for sale. The price of the monument is “only” PLN 800,000. It is a stone temple dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, located in the Lower Silesian commune of Lubawka, just 30 kilometers from the Polish-Czech border. The church was built in the years 1580-1585, and its reconstruction took place in 1736.
“The structure of the temple gives it a medieval appearance. A stone single-nave church with a separate presbytery. There is a wooden ceiling above the nave and a groin vault above the presbytery. In the nave opposite the presbytery there is a preserved wooden structure of the music choir. A gable roof. There is an old tree stand on the plot,” we read on a popular advertising website.
The monument will ideally serve as a banquet, wedding or conference hall. An undeniable advantage is the great acoustics of the building and, after adaptation, it can become a unique facility where musical events can also be organized.

The Magurycz Association raised alarm about the matter in November 2023. “We are sorry that we do not have 800,000. Seriously. Expensive, but negotiable – memory is expensive, especially this holy memory. What is intriguing is the fact that the announcement does not include information that the buyer will also purchase the cemetery naturally surrounding the church, with at least several damaged tombstones and an incalculable number of burials – the lack of this information does not reflect well on the seller, but no one is perfect,” its members wrote on Facebook. The inhabitants of Okrzeszyn were also concerned about the fact that the church was to be sold along with the graves.
Churches for sale in Poland. “There are a lot of customers”
The website recently explored the issue of churches put up for sale in Poland. The church in Okrzeszyn is only a single case. Journalist Katarzyna Zuchowicz found more such offers on advertising websites. The reporter talked not only with the residents of Okrzeszyn and the mayor of Lubawka, but also with representatives of agencies that deal with the sale of historic religious buildings. For example – Bartosz Supryn from the “Sowa Nieruchomości” agency, responsible for the sale of the church in Wieldzdz.
According to the preliminary design – as we read – there was to be a conference and banquet hall, a training center, but also a room for organizing civil weddings.

The website explains that this church belongs to a private owner, and in the 1990s there was a popular local disco called Rink-Weis there. “In place of the former altar and pulpit, there was a DJ, there was a wide bar in the choir, and the sacristy turned into a cloakroom for guests.
