Poland has its own van Gogh painting. Research confirmed the authenticity of the painting

Poland has its own van Gogh. It turns out that the painting “Country Cottages” belonging to the Porczyñski gallery in Warsaw is by Vincent van Gogh. This was confirmed after years of research.

Vincent van Gogh painted “Country Cottages Among the Trees” in 1883, about five years before he created his most famous works. The painter was then visiting Hogeeveen, in the province of Drenthe. The small painting is made with oil paints on board – its dimensions are 28.5 by 39.5 cm.

It’s already confirmed, we have a “Polish” van Gogh

Over the years, the work changed owners, not everyone knew how great a treasure they had. When, at the beginning of the 20th century, van Gogh’s works gained fame and significantly increased in value, “Country Cottages…” were already in the hands of collectors – first in Belgium and then in Switzerland. In the 1980s, the painting finally came to Poland, and since 2020 it has been in the depository of the John Paul II and Stefan Wyszyński Museum.

The expert opinions were conducted by specialists from the Laboratory of Analysis and Non-Destructive Testing of Historic Objects, the Krakow branch of the National Museum. They had to prove that it was not a fake – and there are many such fakes in the world due to the prices achieved by the Dutchman’s works. Specialists from LANBOZ cooperated with specialists from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. For recorces? many complex techniques were used – including: UV radiation, X-ray, microscopes, scanners. The painting has also been carefully restored. The impurities were removed from the canvas, the oak support was reinforced, and the work was given a new frame.

“Rural Cottages” will be available to watch in Warsaw

– We conducted a detailed analysis of the pigments used in the work. These pigments not only matched those described by van Gogh in letters to his brother, but were also consistent with the materials he used in other works of the period, says Dr. Julio del Hoyo, head of LANBOZ.

From April 26, “Country Cottages” will be on display at the Museum. John Paul II and Primate Wyszyński. It is located in the Temple of Divine Providence in Warsaw’s Wilanów district.
