One of the last editions of “Contact Glass” was hosted by Katarzyna Kwiatkowska and Wojciech Zimiński. The viewer called the program to share her difficult experiences. Although the show deals much more with political topics, the older woman connected with the studio to vent. It turned out that her pension did not allow her to function with dignity, and she was also deceived by her children.
Outrageous phone call in “Contact Lens”. “I’ve been watching you for three years”
The call was very depressing, largely because both the viewers and the hosts are aware that there are many more such people in Poland. The next call to the studio, however, had a completely different nature. This time, Mr. Leszek from Stara Miłosna called “Szkło kontaktowe”.
“Hello. I’m lucky. It’s a miracle! I see you on TV, but I’m talking to the phone,” the viewer began and was touched by the host’s comment. However, he quickly moved on to his “problem”, which, as it turned out, concerned the presenter’s clothes.
“Ms. Kasia, when she laughs, is one of the most beautiful women in Warsaw,” said Mr. Leszek. There was nothing wrong with the compliment, but such comments are inappropriate, in a professional situation the presenter should be judged for her competences – not her beauty. Kwiatkowska laughed nervously, but Mr. Leszek did not let up.
“But I won’t tell you much, not much! I’m sorry, don’t be angry. Why do you always have your legs pulled up to your knees?” – added the caller and started talking about Kwiatkowska’s clothes, which, in his opinion, were too revealing. “Ms. Kasia, I have been watching you for three years and I have never seen your knees. But I’m not the only one who has such a wish. I don’t know, 70 percent of men in Warsaw. Because you are a beautiful woman,” Mr. Leszek continued with enthusiasm.
No one interrupted the sexist tirade on TVN24. The host echoed the viewer
Here the limit of good taste has clearly been exceeded. Not only was the sexist tirade not interrupted, but Kwiatkowska noted that she was flattered by the phone call. “It’s great that you called. I’m very pleased. I’ll come home and check the skirts,” she replied to Mr. Leszek. Zimiński didn’t pay any attention to the caller either, and instead of instructing the viewer, he started echoing him. “I would like to ask you very much. Please see what the will of the people is,” said the host.
Mr. Leszek’s voice indicated his quite advanced age, which could have been one of the reasons for the gentle behavior of the presenters. In private situations, skipping the education of older generations about today’s standards may be justified, but here we were dealing with a public discussion. Mr. Leszek’s intentions were certainly not malicious, but condoning such comments normalizes sexist behavior. Moreover, it is rather difficult to imagine a telephone call to the studio in which the viewer would require the presenter to undo additional buttons on his shirt due to his stunning beauty.
