Silver jewelry and cutlery delight with their appearance for some time. Exposing them to air causes the silver to tarnish over time. Instead of using polishes containing harsh chemicals, polish them at home.

Silver jewelry and silver cutlery lose their shine and even turn black over time. It is a coating resulting from the chemical reaction of silver and sulfur in the air. Most silver jewelry and accessories today are plated with a very thin layer of rhodium to protect the metal and give it a brighter and shinier appearance. However, this thin protective layer is destroyed, making it easier for silver items to blacken. Fortunately, there are several simple and inexpensive ways to remove tarnish, polish and clean silver.

Aluminum foil and baking soda. This is one of the best recipes for cleaning silver

An aluminum-sodium bath is very useful when you need to clean more than one thing or larger items, e.g. silver cutlery, candlesticks or tableware. The tarnish disappears as if by magic as a result of an electrolytic reaction that transfers the oxidized tarnish from the silver to the aluminum foil.

  1. Cover the bottom of a large baking tin with aluminum foil, shiny side up.
  2. Use ceramic or glass dishes, never metal ones, to avoid unwanted chemical reactions.
  3. Fill with water and add baking soda.
  4. You need a tablespoon of baking soda for every liter of water.
  5. Bring to a boil and place the tarnished silver inside for 15 seconds.
  6. Remove the silver using kitchen tongs.
  7. Leave the cutlery on a paper towel to cool.

In case of persistent deposits, the procedure may need to be repeated. After rinsing and drying the items, usually no impurities remain, but polishing with a clean, dry cloth makes the silver exceptionally shiny.
