Director Riccardo Chailly and a new version of “Carmen”, in the Musical Fortnight

The presence of one of the great figures of orchestra conducting, Ricardo Chaillywith the Orquesta Filarmónica della Scala, and a version of Carmen own production will be some of the milestones of the 85th edition of the San Sebastian Musical Fortnight.
The cycle, which will take place between August 1 and 30 in San Sebastián and other towns in Gipuzkoa, Araba, Navarra and Lapurdi, offered this Friday in a statement a preview of the programming.
There will be more than 70 musical events, including opera Carmen by Bizet, which had already been announced by the organizers of the cycle.
The Kursaal Auditorium starts on August 1 with the double presence of the Orchester Philharmonique du Luxembourg, under the direction of its owner, Gustavo Gimeno.
The first of the concerts marks the pianist’s debut in the Fortnight Bruce Liuwinner of the Chopin Piano Competition in 2018, who will perform the Piano Concerto No. 5 ‘Egyptian’by Camille Saint-Saëns.
In the second concert the Philharmonique du Luxembourg will have the Easo Mixed Voice Choir and the Moscow bassist Alexander Vinogradov to undertake The execution of Stepan Razinone of Shostakovich’s least performed scores and which is played for the first time in the San Sebastian cycle.
On August 8 and 10, a new operatic production promoted by the Fortnight will premiere, a rereading of the Carmen by Bizet, signed by Emilio Gómez, with Euskadiko Orkestra under the musical direction of José Miguel Pérez-Sierra.
With the Budapest Festival Orchestra, led by Ivan Fischer, the Fortnight audience will be able to hear for the first time the Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, who will perform the Violin Concerto No. 2 by Bela Bartok.
Dance will have its space at the Kursaal on August 25 by the French company Compagnie Käfig, choreographer Mourad Merzouki, and their show Foliahalfway between baroque and street rhythms.
Almost at the end of the cycle, on August 27, the festival welcomes Riccardo Chaillywhich performs for the third time in Fortnight, the last in 2003.
On this occasion, Chailly will conduct his current orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala of Milan. The program is made up of Symphony No. 5 by Tchaikovsky and suites no. 1 and no. 2 by Daphnis and Chloeby Ravel.
The Fortnight closes on August 30 with the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France, under the direction of the Finnish Mikko Franck.
The Victoria Eugenia theater’s programming will begin on August 6 with the Úrsula López Flamenco Company, which will present the show Untitled comedy and will include performances by the Cappella Mariana vocal ensemble and the Constantinople instrumental group.
In addition, the Ancient Music and Chamber Music cycles will be developed at the San Telmo Museum, and those dedicated to the Organ, Contemporary Music, among others, which will include tributes to two Basque artists whose centenary will be commemorated in 2024: Eduardo Chillida and Néstor Basterretxea .
