Paweł Gędłek died suddenly. Few people knew that he was seriously ill
Information about the death of his colleague from the set was provided by W³odzimierz Matuszak before one of the episodes of “Plebania”. The actor had been struggling with an incurable disease for many years. His wife, Kinga, in a conversation with “Mały Gość Niedzielny” confessed that he suffered from complications after untreated flu: “My husband fell ill before our wedding, ten years ago. It was flu. The virus ate the transverse muscle of his heart ventricle. He had this called a hole in the heart. In fact, he suffered through the entire disease. He was admitted to hospital only when he collapsed on the stage of the People’s Theater in Krakow. Even then, doctors were talking about a heart transplant.
In 2004, the actor underwent a heart transplant, but the operation, which was supposed to save his life, ultimately led to his premature end. “He regained consciousness, kissed his loved ones, asked for Holy Mass for the donor, said goodbye and left,” reported Kinga Gędłek. The producers of “Plebania” wanted to preserve the memory of the deceased actor, so Paweł Burczyk played the role of Romusio in the series. “We want the new Romus to retain as many of the features that Paweł put into this character as possible: cordiality, trust, kindness, a certain naivety. So everything that the viewers loved so much about Romus,” explained Olaf Olszewski.
