On December 17, PiS swiftly pushed through the lex TVN law. In reaction to this movement, thousands of Poles took to the streets of many cities and decided to defend the freedom of the media. Protesters demanded that the president veto a law targeting independent television. In just a few days, almost 2.5 million Poles signed the appeal in defense of TVN.
The protest in Wrocław was attended by, inter alia, Member of the Left, Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk. – It would seem that the matter is quiet. The Senate veto reached the Sejm in September, so if the Law and Justice wanted to deal with it, it could have done so in the last few months. As Marshal Terlecki himself admitted, the Senate’s resolution was kept in order to surprise journalists when it was needed. Apparently, such a moment has come. The moment when the government is not coping completely with the pandemic – about 500 people or more die every day, it is not coping with the galloping high prices, inflation is growing higher and more and more people feel its effects in their pockets every day. In addition, it happened on the day when the case with the accident of Prime Minister Szydło was announced. It turned out that BOR members were under pressure and they were forced to give false testimony. On top of that, despite the flexing muscles and the action “Wall behind the Polish uniform”, the same Polish soldier deserted – he says.
According to the deputy, many problems accumulated, which made it more and more difficult for Law and Justice to sweep under the carpet. – Apparently, PiS politicians prefer Poles to talk about “lex TVN” at the Christmas table, instead of how much they have to pay for this table this year – he adds.
The world in the crooked mirror of public media
As Dziemianowicz-Bąk argues, if not for the independent media, Poles might not have learned about many outrageous matters.
– On Sunday, I participated in a protest in Wrocław, where I am a deputy and reminded me of a few important topics, both locally and nationally. All of them would not have seen the light of day if it were not for the independent media, including TVN. I mean, among others the high-profile case of the death of Igor Stachowiak at the Wrocław headquarters, the plots of Prime Minister Morawiecki and his wife, or the Wrocław pact – he says.
Among the topics that it would be more convenient not to talk to PiS politicians about, there could also be the death of 30-year-old Izabela from Pszczyna. Many commentators indicated that the woman was a victim of the Constitutional Court’s abortion ruling.
– The text messages, the correspondence that she exchanged with her mother while lying in the hospital, would certainly not have been described, disclosed and fairly presented if only media such as the current public media existed. The 30-year-old clearly indicated in these news that the situation in which she is located is the result of the anti-abortion ruling of the Tribunal by Julia Przyłębska – points out the deputy.
Power blames women
As he adds, if we relied solely on public media coverage, we would not see the full picture of reality.
– I watch the News sometimes. Not out of fascination, but out of a professional duty. I saw how, for example, women’s strikes were reported. It was presented in the way that the authorities wanted it at that moment. Both the prime minister and the minister of health have tried to blame the rightly protesting women responsible for the pandemic. Such a story could be heard in the public media – he says.
The deputy points out that the coronavirus pandemic and what is happening to the public media at that time is a perfect example of how to misdirect it. – At a time when disinformation is spreading, hostile anti-vaccine propaganda, the public media should be the tool that is used to convince people to vaccinate, to break this disinformation, and not to blame social protests. Protests that would not have happened if this authority had not ordered the publication of one. And not another judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal, because it is not like that in October 2020 women went out onto the streets by themselves, because they wanted to walk. They left because they were led out by Jarosław Kaczyński and Julia Przyłębska – he explains.
“I do not expect much from Andrzej Duda”
The amendment to the law has already hit the president’s desk. Commentators speculate what the head of state will do. Interestingly, they are no longer considering his statement regarding the defense of economic freedom in Poland, but rather whether he will refer the case to the Constitutional Tribunal or whether he will sign the amendment right away.
– All scenarios are possible, but I think that the president will send lex TVN to the Constitutional Tribunal of Julia Przyłębska so that this law could lie there and hang like a sword over the free media – admits the MP from Lewica.
Dziemianowicz-Bąk reminds that the president’s decision is important, on the one hand, about the freedom and independence of the media, but also about the Polish raison d’état, which the head of state should protect.
– We have a difficult geopolitical situation, a crisis on the Russian-Ukrainian border, Russia is waiting for a guarantee from the United States that Ukraine will not be included in NATO structures. Entering into an open economic conflict with the United States in such a situation would be a very irresponsible action, both in terms of international foreign policy and the policy related to Poland’s security. I do not expect much from Andrzej Duda, but the head of state should also take it into account. I think that if the president chose the nuclear option and signed this law, he would send a very dangerous signal and create a real threat to Poland’s security, summarizes the deputy.
