The police stopped a woman who crossed the street at a red light and fined her PLN 200. The old lady was terrified. As she confessed, she was in a hurry to catch the bus. She also added that this amount is half of her pension, which she spends on grocery shopping. – I get half of the food for this – we hear in the recording published on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
Could the police consider giving a warning?
The case was described, among others, by the journalist. He also asked inspector Wojciech Pasieczny – a retired traffic policeman from the capital, to comment on this matter. In his opinion, the police could have considered giving a warning if the woman did not pose a threat to road traffic. It is worth mentioning that the officers suggested that the pensioner refuse to accept the ticket. However, in such a case, the case would go to court and the woman would bear the costs.
The incident outraged the users of the X platform. “There are no words! It’s easiest to catch the old woman”, “They could have issued a warning” – we can read under the recording. There were also opposing voices. “Very good. I don’t know how many times an elderly person almost got in front of me because he was crossing on a red light,” commented one man.
“The pedestrian is at a disadvantage”
The Kielce command also commented on the matter. According to information provided to the media by press officer Małgorzata Perkowska-Kiepas, the incident took place on a busy street leading to two hospitals. Moreover, as she recalled, last year there were 49 accidents involving first-timers in the capital of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Three people died as a result.
– In the event of a collision between a pedestrian and a car, it is known that the pedestrian is in a losing position, which often results in serious injuries or even death. Therefore, the response to this type of behavior is crucial. Traffic lights are there to ensure the safety of pedestrians, said Małgorzata Perkowska-Kiepas in an interview with “Fakt”.
