You may remember the video clip for ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ by Los Nikis that appears in the images that accompany these lines, but no, in reality this was not the video clip, but a performance at the legendary Crystal Ball. Neither this song, nor ‘Cien gaviotas’ by Duncan Dhu, nor ‘Mucho Mejor’ by Los Rodríguez had them. Now these songs need ideas to pay off that debt.
How can a song as iconic as ‘Adiós Papa’ by Los Ronaldos, in which the chorus was repeated, be audiovisually brought to our days? “Bye dad, bye dad, get us some more money”? That thing about getting money reminds us of today’s precarious generations.
But how can we not play with this chorus or with the one from the song ‘Mucho mejor’ by Los Rodríguez that says “it’s hot, it’s hot, I was waiting for you to sing my song.” In fact, this 1996 anthem It brings to mind long nights of partying… Of course, it is clear that “it is hot” does not mean the same now as it did 30 years ago when the climate emergency was not so alarming.
Given this situation, the Warner Music record company wants make video clips of five iconic songs from our history that they never had, for which they have opened a contest that they have called ‘Los que Faltaban’ in which the participants will have to present ideas, which we hope are better than bringing out seagulls in the homonymous song by the Spanish group Duncan Dhu.
But the proposals are also going to have to compete with the jewels that were filmed in ‘The Crystal Ball’, a program that aired during the 80s on public television that sought to reflect the language and concerns of those who lived through the movida movement. And many of the images that come to mind when we listen to these iconic songs confuse us, since the performances in this space are not the official video clips.
For example, it is easy to think that this legendary performance by the Nikis at the Retiro representing their song ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ corresponds with their official video, but this is not the case. Even, Now we could try to get her away from political shouting and link it more with much nobler successes such as the latest victory of the women’s soccer team.
Registration for ‘Those who were missing’ is now open
‘Those who were missing’ is a unique contest aimed at both content creators and image professionals in which they can present their creative ideas to produce what will become the official video clips of some of the most iconic songs in the history of Spanish music that have defined the identity of many over the years.
