Maria Chwalibóg, a theater and film actress, has died. For her role in Agnieszka Holland’s “A Single Woman”, she received an award for a leading female role at the 13th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia and a nomination for the Golden Duck. She performed on the stage of the Dramatic Theater in Warsaw and at the National Theater. The news of the artist’s death was announced by the Association of Polish Stage Artists.

“We regret to inform you that Maria Chwalibóg, an outstanding actress, a long-time member of the ZASP Dramatic Theater Section, has passed away. Our sincerest condolences. May she rest in peace,” reads the content of the statement published on the profile of the Association of Polish Stage Artists on social media.
Maria Chwalibóg was born on February 4, 1933 in Warsaw. She studied at the State Theater School in Łódź. In 1956, she played an episodic role in the famous Polish production “Nikodem Dyzma”. A little later, she appeared in Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s drama “Mother Joanna of Angels”, where she appeared as the innkeeper Antoś. In 2011, the actress received the Gold Cross of Merit “for discovering the pages of Polish history”, and in 2018 she was awarded the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
During her nearly 60-year career, Chwalibóg appeared in almost 40 productions. The most popular ones include “Wanted, Wanted” by Stanisław Bareja, “Korczak”, a drama directed by Andrzej Wajda, and “Civil War” based on the columns of Mira Michałowska. Maria Chwalibóg last appeared on the big screen in 2015 in the production of “Carte Blanche”.
