The American chain of Walmart stores has decided to introduce a subscription to self-service checkouts. Customers can subscribe to the Walmart+ option, a the annual cost is $98, or approximately PLN 390. The checkouts will also be available to couriers who deliver food thanks to the Walmart Spark service.

Another American company – Target – came up with a similar idea. Americans will not shop there at the self-service checkout during rush hours. The decision is related to the increased number of thefts and frauds.

Self-service checkouts are very popular in Poland, but as it turns out, they do not entirely work to the advantage of stores. Scientists Dr. Farhana Nusrat and Dr. Yanliu Huang from Drexel University study on customers and self-checkout. The results turned out to be surprising. – When customers use regular checkouts, they feel more loyal to the store and are more likely to return to it in the future and recommend it to others. In turn, when customers use self-service checkouts, they feel frustrated that they have to do the work themselves, put a lot of effort into it and do not get the service they believe they deserve, explained Dr. Farhana Nusrat.
