Easter lamb – a symbol of the resurrected Christ, but not only that
The lamb is an inseparable symbol of Easter, which must be included in Easter baskets. The Easter lamb can be made, among others: made of butter, sugar, chocolate or pound cake. It has a red victory banner with a cross attached to it. What does the lamb symbolize?
The symbolism of the lamb in the Bible is very wide. The Old Testament talks about sacrificing a lamb to God as atonement for sins. Christ, in turn, is referred to as the Lamb of God. The death of Christ is therefore perceived through the prism of the greatest sacrifice made to God.
Symbols of Easter in our baskets
The most important symbols can be found in Easter baskets, with which we go to churches in droves on Holy Saturday. Apart from the lamb, the most important Easter symbols in the Easter basket will be:
- eggs – they usually come in the form of colorful Easter eggs, but the Easter basket must also include at least one boiled egg without a decorated shell, which the household will share during Easter breakfast. The egg is an Easter symbol of rebirth of life;
- Easter cake – this is (next to ) the main Easter baking. In the old days, the Easter cake had to be prepared by the hostess herself, and successful baking was a confirmation of her culinary skills;
- horseradish – it is an Easter symbol referring to the bitterness of Christ’s passion and suffering. It is a sign of physical strength and stamina;
- salt – it is an Easter symbol signifying strength (salt preserves food) and durability of the relationship between God and man.
An Easter symbol on our tables
The Easter symbol can be found not only in Easter baskets, but also on our holiday tables. The importance and unique dimension of Easter breakfast make us want our table to look particularly beautiful. And nothing reflects the solemn nature of the celebration like a festive tablecloth. Since ancient times, holiday tables have been decorated with tablecloths specially reserved for this occasion. Today, on store shelves you will find a wide selection of tablecloths decorated with Easter symbols (Easter eggs, rabbits, Easter chickens, etc.). We can also choose a table runner and table mats with Easter symbols. What’s on the table? A pot with young oats or young cress is obligatory – an Easter lamb should stand on it. It will remind you of the most important dimension of celebration.
Easter symbols for children – what form can they take?
For many children, an Easter symbol may be a basket with a holy candle, which they proudly hold in their hands on Holy Saturday. In some regions of Poland, during Easter, children receive gifts from the bunny (similar to Christmas gifts from Santa Claus). During the Easter period, many homes display decorations related to the theme of the holiday, which do not necessarily refer directly to the religious dimension of Easter. Easter decorations are dominated by various types of bunny figurines, which are loved by children. An inseparable Easter symbol for children is certainly a water gun or egg, which is used to pour water on each other to make Ĺmigus-dyngus.
Easter symbols – drawings, cards and Easter eggs as a form of family preparation for Easter
How can you show your child Easter symbols? Drawings related to the theme, as well as preparing Christmas cards for loved ones together, can be a pretext for a conversation about why Easter is celebrated and what its significance is. It is also worth encouraging people to paint Easter eggs and Easter eggs together. It is not only a way to involve the youngest in Christmas preparations, but also an opportunity to spend time together and improve their manual skills.
Easter symbols – graphics on Easter cards
Where else can you find Easter symbols? The graphics on Christmas cards (both traditional and online) are also filled with Easter symbols. One of the most common religious motifs on Easter cards is the figure of the resurrected Christ holding a red banner of victory in his hand. Cards and graphics that are less religious in nature are most often decorated with Easter eggs, catkins branches, spring flowers and yellow chickens.
