March 14, 2024 was the 44th anniversary of the plane crash in which the legend of the Polish stage died. She was mourned not only by fans, but also by her then 4-year-old daughter and the mourning Jarosław Kukulski, the author of most of her hits, and privately the artist’s husband. The tragic news also shocked the drummer of the band Perfect, with whom she had a warm bond a few months before her death.
The marriage of Anna Jantar and Jarosław Kukulski was going through a crisis. The singer fell in love with another man?
Anna Jantar and Wojciech Morawski, because this is him, met at the beginning of 1979. The singer did not have a band with which she could tour. One day, her manager Bogdan Zep was at a concert taking place in Stodoła in Warsaw. Right after the performance, he went backstage and made a proposal to the musicians. – He said that Mrs. Anna doesn’t have a band now and would be happy to play with us – recalled Wojciech Morawski in an interview with . This is how the singer’s cooperation with the beginning rock band began, and soon after, their first joint tour for Polonia in the United States.
During their stay overseas, a passionate feeling was born between Jantar and Morawski. The singer was beaming with joy, although before leaving Poland she had a sad look on her face. It was no secret that things weren’t going well for her. Kukulski had a specific vision for his wife’s career, which was not consistent with what she wanted. He also thought that going to the USA was unnecessary, but she pushed through this idea and had her own way. – We parted in anger – then bitterness.
Jantar’s death led Morawski to despair. Years later, he revealed his feelings for her
Morawski was supposed to bring a breath of freshness into her life. The artist, who came from a traditional home, was impressed by his intellect and interests. – Already in the 1970s, during the times of deep communism, he was interested in Buddhism and Eastern philosophy. He has broad intellectual horizons and that is what fascinated Anna, said her close friend Jantar. The news about the alleged affair broke out in the Polish media like a bolt from the blue, and with it, rumors abounded behind the scenes. Apparently, the singer even wanted to give up her career and start a new life with her beloved overseas, which was even confirmed in one of the interviews given shortly after her death. – It wasn’t superficial discouragement with her current life, she had plans, she wanted to buy a house, she said that she would move, that she would play in clubs, that she didn’t need fame. She really wanted to change her life, he argued. We will never know what really happened.
However, the plans fell apart on March 14, 1980. The plane in which Jantar was returning from New York to Warsaw crashed as a result of a failure while trying to land at the Okęcie airport. The less than 30-year-old artist was one of the 87 victims. The news of her death shocked the whole of Poland, but Morawski learned about it only the next day from the radio. – He broke down and started drinking – said his close friend in an interview with Świat Gwiazd, adding that it plunged him into despair for many months. However, he himself did not comment on it in the press for decades. Only recently, during an interview for the website, was the question asked whether he loved her. “Yes,” he confessed after a moment of silence. – Like any. Love is relative. We don’t know what it means, he added eloquently.
