When the Pole received the Oscar in 1983, the room erupted with laughter. Then he was arrested

In 1983, during the Oscars, Zbigniew Rybczyñski had his five minutes on stage, whose short “Tango” was awarded by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. When he thanked for the statuette with the help of a translator, the audience couldn’t help but laugh. Later, the Polish director celebrated his success in… arrest. What happened at the gala?

Zbigniew Rybczyński is one of the most respected Polish screenwriters in the world, famous for bold experimentation not only with form, but also with editing techniques. Although he debuted in 1973, he gained real popularity only a decade later thanks to . Contrary to appearances, this was not due to the production that received the award, but to the scandal that took place right after his speech.

At the Oscars gala, Rybczyński spoke with an interpreter. Their speech made the audience laugh

Although Rybczyński’s artistic achievements include many excellent titles, his most important work is the short film “Tango”, which premiered in 1981. Two years later, the production was noticed and ultimately awarded an Oscar in the Best Animated Short Film category. The director appeared at the awards gala in the company of Polish journalist Jolanta Maria Czaderska-Hayek, who acted as his translator. – Dear members of the Academy, ladies and gentlemen. I made a short film, so I will speak very briefly – at the beginning. – I am very honored by the award and I dream that one day I will have the opportunity to speak from this place longer – he added.

After these words, he paused to give his companion a kiss on the cheek. – It’s a Slavic custom, we are very warm people – the woman hastily explained, seeing the omnipresent consternation among the gathered people. Their joint speech caused an avalanche of laughter, but also great emotions. Many believed that the director appeared on stage in a state of intoxication, which Czaderska-Hayek strongly denied. – He was absolutely not drunk. He was more drunk with happiness, she argued. However, many did not believe her words, especially considering the situation that took place a few minutes later.

The scandal overshadowed Rybczyński’s success. He celebrated winning the Oscar while in custody

After receiving the statuette, Rybczyński decided to cool down his emotions by going out for a cigarette, but he did not return to the gala. The security guards standing at the entrance said that he was definitely not on the guest list, because the event had already started a long time ago and if he was actually going to attend, he wouldn’t show up so late. Due to the fact that the director did not know the language, he tried to explain his reasons to them with lively gestures. This had no effect, so he finally resorted to force.

A scandal broke out. – I go for a smoke out of surprise, I come back and these waiters jump on my back, I kick them in the balls, they put handcuffs on me, they take me to the garage, even though I shout “I have Oscar”, because then I can’t do anything else – the course of events in “Gazeta Wyborcza”. The situation looked slightly different from Czaderska-Hayek’s perspective. “He got nervous and started kicking all those gorillas,” she said. – He didn’t speak any English. He didn’t say: “I got an Oscar”, but “I am Oscar”, she recalled. Ultimately, the police were called to the scene and Rybczyński was taken to custody, where he celebrated his undoubted success together with the other arrested people.
