“Millennium” is the third and last season of the series created by Kasper Bajon. It appeared on February 28, 2024 and immediately went to the top of the list of the most watched series in Poland. The production was enthusiastically received by both reviewers (many believe it is the best installment of the entire series) and viewers, who had already started watching previous seasons two months earlier in preparation for the premiere of the new chapter of the story.
The first series has been in the Netflix Top 10 for the last five weeks, and the second series for eight weeks. Let us recall that over the course of these episodes, a lot has changed in the lives of Piotr and Teresa Zarzycki. Note – in the following we will summarize parts of the plot of all three seasons.
Why is there no Teresa in the last season of “Rojst”?
When we meet Teresa Zarzycka in the first season of “Rojst”, she is a young married woman just out of college. She and Piotr are moving to a new city and, moreover, she is already very pregnant. She doesn’t really know anyone there except her husband, and he disappears for days to solve the mystery of the mysterious death of a local teenager. Another thing is that he is also unfaithful and starts an affair with one of the suspects (played by Magdalena Walach) – however, he decides to end the matter and moves out with his wife after explaining the scandal that fueled the action of the first series.
In the second season, it turns out that Zarzycki’s affair resulted in an illegitimate child. However, his mother dies during childbirth and the boy is given up for adoption. In 1997, as a teenager, he was murdered, and Zarzycki did not find out that he was his father. Meanwhile, Teresa examines her conscience and realizes that she got married too young and only because she got pregnant. When he meets Anna Jass (Magdalena Różczka), he falls in love with her and tells her why she was stuck in an unsatisfactory relationship for years. In the end, Teresa decides to leave Zarzycki and start a life together with Jass.
In the third series, however, viewers learn that Teresa was not allowed to enjoy her new love for long. The scriptwriters decided to kill her in a tragic car accident, which casts a shadow on the lives of her partner, daughter Wanda and ex-husband. Why this decision? Jan Holoubek explained this to us during an interview:
It was a very difficult decision for me because this is a character that I loved in the first and second seasons. Out of respect for this character, I didn’t want to…
We simply didn’t have a good dramatic engine for this character and we thought it was better to keep her in her version from the first and second seasons than to artificially create drama that doesn’t exist. Dramaturgically, we were unable to come up with anything new that would surpass what happened in “Rojście’97”. That would be grinding the same pot.
Zofia Wichłacz did not even take part in the recording of the car accident scene. As you can see in the photos from the set published by Wanda Marzec, the role of Teresa was played by another actress. So the audience doesn’t even see her face, only her hanging head. Of course, one may wonder whether it was necessary to kill off the character immediately and whether Anna Jass really needed such a traumatic motivation during the search for Wanda in the third series, but if the creators decided that it would be best, it is difficult to argue with them. However, let us add that what they did with the character of the nice policeman Dzidzi cries to heaven for vengeance – he really didn’t have to die.
