Thursday, March 14, 2024, marks the 44th anniversary of the plane crash in the Kabacki Forest. In a tragic event, the icon of the Polish stage, Anna Jantar, died. Many years after the artist’s death, her daughter – Natalia Kukulska – decided to publish the love letter that her mother received from her father. Anna Jantar had it with her in the last moments of her life.

Anna Jantar, an outstanding Polish singer and icon of the Polish stage of the 1970s, died in a plane crash on March 14, 1980. It was a huge blow to her family – her distraught husband and her 4-year-old daughter, Natalia. Today she is an adult woman who followed in her mother’s artistic footsteps. Many years after the tragic death of her mother, Natalia Kukulska faced not only mourning and unimaginable trauma, but also the rumors that began to circulate about her parents’ marriage.

A few years ago, the star decided to put a stop to it. She published the content of a love letter that Jarosław Kukulski – her father – sent to her wife. Anna Jantar was finishing her tour of the United States at the time. The flight to Poland on March 14, 1980 was her last trip. The artist had a letter from her beloved husband.

I love you with all my heart and you can count on me in every situation, and whether you interpret my confession as weakness or as love that needs help depends only on you. Our happiness, Anusia, depends only on us. However, for this to be possible, we both have to want it. I kiss you deeply, your Jarek. PS. This letter to you is the only and last one. If I had to write it again, you’d probably have to finish it yourself

– was the content of a touching letter published years later by Natalia Kukulska.

Anna Jantar died 44 years ago. “I remember ambulances and alcohol”

The scheduled flight of LOT Polish Airlines Il-62 “Mikołaj Kopernik” was flying from New York to Warsaw. On the fateful day, it crashed in the Kabacki Forest, near the Warsaw Okęcie airport, at 11.15, while descending to land. 87 people died in the tragic disaster – 77 passengers and 10 crew members.

Anna Jantar’s family was waiting at the airport as she returned home – her husband, her then 4-year-old daughter and her grandmother. Natalia Kukulska recalled in later interviews that she remembered people’s despair and panic, as well as the paramedics who made last attempts to save anyone. Unfortunately, they all died.

I remember how my grandmother ripped the bouquet of freesias out of my hands and threw them on the ground. I remember ambulances resuscitating families and alcohol being given to calm them down.

– she said in one of the conversations.

The American ethnomusicologist Alan Parkhurst Merriam, as well as 22 members of the United States amateur boxing team, also died in the dramatic crash. Six students from Warsaw universities who were returning from the meetings of the International Association of Economic and Commercial Sciences Students (AIESEC) also died.
