the sculptor Vicente Larrea (Bilbao, 1934-2024) died this Wednesday, as confirmed by the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum.

Larrea, son and grandson of sculptors with a workshop in Bilbao, was popular for his large abstract metal works located in numerous public spaces on our streets, especially in Bilbao.

In the capital of Biscay you can see his creations outside the Euskalduna palace, behind the Government Subdelegation, on Gran Vía, in Miribilla, Ametzola or Zorrotzaurre, as well as in the Fine Arts Museum.

His sculptures are also known next to the highway detour to the Loiu airport, in Galdakao, outside the Artium Museum in Vitoria or in the Citadel of Pamplona.

In 1994, the Sala Rekalde of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him.

The Fine Arts Museum has “deeply” mourned the death of Vicente Larrea, an artist “committed to Basque culture and our museum” who was linked to the informalist movement and “knew how to give primitive forms their own energy and expression.”
