“Facts” about food price increases. The Poles’ opinion was missing: “There is no need to dramatize”

The abolition of zero VAT on food was one of the most widely discussed topics on news websites on Wednesday, March 12. The materials broadcast on TVP1 and TV Republika included street surveys conducted among Poles. The journalists of “Fakty” approached the topic completely differently and instead of asking passers-by for their opinion, they asked economists for their opinion.

On Wednesday, March 12, many news stations published materials regarding the abolition of zero VAT on food. It was supposed to be in force until the end of last year, but the previous government extended it for another three months. Donald Tusk announced that the food shield introduced in February 2022 will end at the beginning of April.

“Fakty” TVN did not ignore the opinion of Poles about the increase in food prices

For all Poles, this means increases in food prices, which have become the subject of a political dispute. On TVP1, TV Republika and TVN, they were the second most widely discussed topic in the evening news programs. While the first two stations approached it in a similar way, presenting viewers with statements from politicians, specialists and surveys conducted among Poles, this last element simply did not appear in “Facts”.

“It was to be expected”, “As a pensioner, I will feel it very much”, “A bit of VAT, right? Too bad” – said passers-by in the material of TV Republika. The poll also appeared in the introduction to the material “19:30” on TV One: “Prices remain high”, “I’m certainly not happy about it. Everyone would like to pay less.”

The journalists of “Fakty” TVN approached the topic completely differently – instead of the statements of passers-by, they presented the viewers with comments from famous economists: Dr. Tomasz Kopyściański and Dr. Edyta Wojtyla. “There is nothing to dramatize here. This is a return to normal times, when the economy is coping with all the surrounding circumstances. We can see this year that there will be growth, wages are growing faster than inflation,” the expert argued. “Now is a really good time to do it… An economy on steroids cannot be maintained for long,” said Dr. Kopyściański.
