Jerzy Stuhr not only stars in the play, but also directed it. – Jurek came to me two years ago and said he would like to say goodbye to the audience with this role. He was a teacher all his life, he was a rector, he taught the Stanisławski method and he thought it would be his beautiful farewell – said Krystyna Janda in a program broadcast a few days ago by TVP.
“Genius” at the Polonia Theater. What is art about?
The play “Genius” premiered on February 22. Its action takes place on December 20, 1937, two days after Stalin’s birthday. And Stalin, played by Jacek Braciak, is one of the two main characters. The second is Konstanty Stanisławski, considered the father of modern theater. He also created a “method”, i.e. a system of rules for acting, which is still considered canonical – in short, an actor is not supposed to show his character on stage, but “become” it.
In “Genius”, Stanislavski tells Stalin about this method. – It is such a perverse idea to apply Stanislavski’s method to the public speeches of a total ruler. This is shocking, terrifying. At the same time (Stanislavski – ed.) is doing it to save several great artists, to release them from the camps – Janda said about the plot.
Jerzy Stuhr says goodbye to the audience
As Janda recalls, the idea of staging the play appeared some time ago. Moreover, it came at a time when Stuhr was in really poor physical shape. – Two years ago, after the stroke, he was in such a condition that he almost couldn’t speak – recalled the actress.
In July 2020, the actor suffered a stroke. He was with his wife in Podhale and suddenly in the evening he felt very bad. He quickly went to hospital, where he received help. A few weeks later he gave an interview in which he admitted that .
There were also various other problems that postponed the premiere. – At one point I said: Jurek, we can do this, say goodbye. But “say goodbye” doesn’t mean you stop playing, you’ll play for another five years! Do four years at least, as long as you can. It’s a beautiful role and a beautiful performance. I’m happy that we have it in the theater, said Janda.
Even if “Genius” is really supposed to be the actor’s farewell to the audience, it doesn’t seem that the audience wants to part with him. Tickets are very popular. They are practically impossible to buy on the Polonia Theater website. The performances are sold out until the end of the year.
