He has been fighting against plastic for a long time. Disposable plastic dishes and plastic straws are already disappearing, but the goal is more ambitious. Now EU officials are declaring war on single-use packaging. Work is underway, which will enter directly into law in each Member State without implementing the directive. It is intended to reduce the production of waste that cannot be recycled. This means that many, but not only, well-known packaging will disappear from store shelves.

The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union regarding the introduction of a ban on placing food products, including vegetables and fruit, in single-use plastic packaging. This also applies to hygiene products and food additives. The aim is to reduce the production of packaging waste and stop the rising tide of plastic waste.

The ban is intended to cover “single-use plastic packaging”, including single-use plastic containers for food, drinks and hygiene products. Disposable packaging for spices and additives such as ketchup, offered in restaurants, and cosmetics, e.g. in hotels, will also disappear. Disposable plastic bags will also be withdrawn, and the fight against them has been going on for some time.

The goal is to completely eliminate single-use plastics and make all packaging reusable or recyclable. EU countries have until 2030 and 2040 to do this. By 2029, 90 percent plastic and metal packaging (e.g. cans) is to be subject to selective collection. The following will remain safe, among others: compostable plastic packaging.

EU officials also want packaging containing potentially dangerous substances to disappear from the landscape. This means that packaging intended for contact with food containing per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, the so-called eternal chemicals, i.e. PFAS, and bisphenol A (BPA).
