At the end of February, “Shogun” debuted on Disney+. The series is an adaptation of the best-selling novel by James Clavell, which was previously adapted into a miniseries. Although the action of the new production takes place in 1600 in Japan, it was shot in several places around the world. In addition to the cherry blossom country, the list of “Shogun” series locations also includes Vancouver, Port Moody and Ucluelet in Canada. This is where one of the most difficult scenes we have seen in the series so far was created.
This scene from “Shogun” was shot in winter. Cosmo Jarvis made quite a sacrifice
In the last scene of episode 3 of the series, Toronaga wished that the newly baptized Hatamoto would teach him how to jump into the water. The half-naked Blackthorn had to demonstrate his skills to the Lord many times before he decided to enter the race with him. The photos for the mentioned scene were taken in November 2022, in the Canadian city of Port Moody. In an interview for TVLine, Anna Sawai (Mariko) admitted that despite unfavorable weather conditions, Cosmo Jarvis decided to take the shots without the help of a stuntman. “It was the middle of winter and freezing cold. They told him, ‘You don’t have to do this.’ “We’ll get a stuntman to do it. But even though he had practically no clothes on, he wanted to do it.”
The actor himself also talked about the scene: “It was quite cold for a lot of the shoot. But that’s all part of the job. And it’s good to be uncomfortable. The job was very uncomfortable at times, but because Blackthorne didn’t feel comfortable for a lot of the book, It was important to get it right.”
