Eric Carmen, who became a power pop icon in the early 1970s as the frontman of The Raspberries before achieving solo success with hits such as “All By Myself” and “Hungry Eyes”, has died at the age of 74.

“It is with great sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of Eric Carmen’s death,” wrote the singer’s wife, Amy Carmen. “Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep over the weekend. It brought him great joy to know that his music touched so many over the decades and will remain his lasting legacy. We ask that the family respect the privacy of the family as we mourn our tremendous loss. ‘Love is the only thing that matters. …faithful and eternal’.” – she added. She did not provide the cause of death or the exact date of death. This last quote from Carmen’s wife is a reference to the song “Love Is All That Matters” from his 1977 solo album “Boats Against the Current”.

As the vocalist and lyricist of The Raspberries, Carmen opposed the heavy rock popular in the 1970s and focused on a more pop, “Beatles” sound. He wrote the band’s great hits, such as “Go All the Way”0′ Tonight”, “I Wanna Be With You”, “Let’s Pretend” and “Overnight Sensation”. After the breakup of the group, he continued his successful solo career. One of his the most famous song is “All by Myself”, which was “sung” by the main character, played by Renee Zellweger, in the movie “Bridget Jones’s Diary”. He wrote this song together with Clive Davis and less than 18 months after the release of the last Raspberries album, the song arrived to second place on the list of the most popular American singles.

His other text also gained immortality thanks to cinematography. “Hungry Eyes” became a hit after being featured on the “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack. In 1987, the song reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

The famous works of the musician born in 1949 also include: “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again” or “Hey Deanie” (Shaun Cassidy’s hit).
