The list of nominees for 2024 includes Justine Trier’s latest production “Anatomy of a Fall”, which breaks the mold of classic courtroom and crime dramas. In the film, the guilty party quickly ceases to matter and complicated family relationships come to the fore. One of the heroes of the French film is Snoop – a dog played by Messi.
Oscars 2024. Messi the dog appeared at the gala and stole the show
The audience was moved by the role of the dog. In the film, he plays the blind Daniel’s guide and best friend. One scene is particularly moving because Messi had to pretend to be dead, which he did extremely convincingly. When the dog took part in the Oscar luncheon in February, questions arose on the Internet as to whether the dog would also take part in the gala. Initially, it was said that the seven-year-old border collie would watch the awards ceremony away from the spotlight. However, he eventually appeared on the red carpet.
He was welcomed at the gala by Jimmy Kimmel himself, and the video of Messi pissing on star Matt Damon quickly became a hit on the Internet. The dog was constantly looked after, received stroking and treats and did not look dissatisfied, but the dog behaviorist warns that wrong conclusions can be drawn based on such short recordings.
– For most dogs, an event like the Oscars would be far too stressful. However, dogs are different,” notes dog trainer Agnieszka Grynkiewicz from Dogfulness. “Border collie dogs are great at tasks, but they are not very good at resting. These dogs are usually very sensitive to stimuli – sounds and movement. It’s easy to imagine that at a large party the dog is flooded with stimuli – says the expert. – For the border collies I know, not only the Oscars would be too much of a challenge, but even going to a family party would be too much of a challenge – he says.
Is the Oscars a good place for a dog? A behaviorist explains
However, Messi looks calm in the videos. The behaviorist explains that performing tasks brings a lot of satisfaction to border dogs, but it is often forgotten that for a dog it is a job that involves stress. – The situation this dog finds itself in requires a lot of self-control, and at the same time provides few opportunities to relieve tension or calm down. Additionally, the dog is flooded with stimuli – lots of people from different directions, loud sounds, which makes the situation even more difficult. Such tasks are OK for some dogs, as long as they last for a short time and then the dog can release the tension and relax, says Agnieszka Grynkiewicz.
We don’t know how long Messi had to endure at the Oscars. Perhaps the handlers made sure the dog had time to relax between tasks. Why doesn’t the dog look nervous? We also got an answer to this. – When a dog is in a task, it is easy to miss his stress – he does not cower, does not tremble, does not try to get out of the situation. He himself, in a sense, “misses” stress, but his body is highly activated, which affects his overall well-being and emotional balance. Similarly, we often feel stress only after an important and stressful task, and not during it – explains the expert.
Agnieszka Grynkiewicz points out that Messi’s race is very important in the case in question. – In the case of border collies, finding a balance between the dog’s need for work and the need for rest can be very difficult. It is even more important not to overstimulate the dog. We often overstimulate our dogs on a daily basis and provide too few opportunities for healthy release of tension and relaxation. It’s worth remembering this, says the dog trainer.
