The nun married a Polish monk. When they met, “she felt a change in herself and it terrified her”

Their love story is a ready-made film script. Mary Elizabeth met her husband Robert 24 years after entering the convent. He was a monk at that time. Love for a man was a huge surprise for the nun. And even though she initially had major concerns, she eventually decided to completely change her life. Since 2015, she and Robert have been happily married.

Mary Elizabeth lived in a convent in Preston from the age of 19. She felt a calling when she was 16. Her peaceful life was interrupted by an encounter in 2015. Then the nun met Brother Robert from Poland. A monk from Silesia then came to visit Great Britain. Their extraordinary love story is regularly recalled in the British media. Some time ago it was published on the BBC website.

He proposed marriage to her. She didn’t know what to do

Mary Elizabeth (formerly Lisa Tinkler) met her future husband 24 years after entering the convent. As you can easily guess, her love for the monk was a huge surprise for her. However, the feeling was so strong that both she and the man decided to make a revolution in their lives. It is worth mentioning that at that time Robert had been a monk for 13 years and did not plan any changes.

It all started when the man’s robe accidentally touched his sister’s hand. At that moment she felt “something like an electric shock.” A week later, the monk wrote to her. He asked directly if she would leave the order to become his wife. Mary Elizabeth was shocked. After all, the man she just met didn’t really know anything about her. At that moment she didn’t know what to do. After meeting him, she became very nervous. She was afraid that her sisters would find out that she was in love with someone. – I felt a change inside me and it scared me – she recalled years later.

“My fear wasn’t about my faith”

Moreover, the nun was afraid of the reaction not only of other sisters, but also of her family members. Ultimately, however, she decided to have a frank conversation with her superior. She did not hide her surprise that a woman would declare love for a man she hardly knew. After this conversation, Mary Elizabeth left the convent. In 2015, she and Robert got married. The man does not hide that at first the whole situation scared him. – But my fear was not about my faith, but about how to start a new life at the age of 53 – he revealed in a BBC report about their extraordinary love. It is also worth mentioning that the change of life did not affect their faith at all. Both she and he are still religious. Moreover, Robert became a priest in the Anglican Church.
