She became pregnant at the age of 11. “I was looking for acceptance”
– My parents took me to the clinic where the staff immediately presented me with my “options”. I didn’t really understand sex or pregnancy back then, and they were talking about abortion – said Davey, 35, in an interview with “The Sun”.
The teenager, however, did not give in to pressure from her relatives and medical staff and decided to give birth. – I think my parents were ashamed of what other people thought of us, but for me it was something more, it was the most important decision in my life. (…) I decided that I wanted to keep the child, despite opposition from everyone around me. And I have never regretted my decision – he says.
The child’s father was the 14-year-old brother of her best friend, who, when he heard about the pregnancy, moved to another city with his family. – In retrospect, I know that I was looking for attention, acceptance and what I thought was love, because I did not grow up in the best home myself. My mother was in and out of my life, and my dad worked a lot, so I was mainly raised by my paternal great-grandmother, who was 80 years old. (…) I didn’t know a good definition of love, relationships or inappropriate behavior, explains Davey, who gave birth to Samantha during the summer holidays, between sixth and seventh grades. Due to the difficult situation in the family, she was unable to return to school.
– It was scary. We needed the government’s help. I remember going to the food stamp office and being listed as “dropped out of high school”. Then it occurred to me that I had to do better, remembers Davey, who had to deal not only with raising a child alone at such a young age, but and cruel comments from other people.
– The kids at school called me offensive nicknames and said that I slept with a lot of people, which was not true. People even gossiped that my dad was the father of my child. It was really hard because he never hurt me in any way. When you have a child so young, people want to believe it’s abuse because it’s easier than the truth – that it can happen. (…) And the reality is that there is contact with sex everywhere, be it at home, at school, with friends, even on TV and social media – she emphasizes.
As she confesses, that’s why she decided to share her story.
I think it’s really important that parents are open to their children. (…) I take responsibility for what happened, I knew what I was doing, but I didn’t understand the consequences of having sex. And I wasn’t emotionally mature enough to deal with its consequences
– he points out.
Due to the difficult family situation, Felicia and her daughter were placed in a foster family, which helped her finish school and even go to university. Today, Davey is 35 years old and is a happy mother of five children, as well as a grandmother to a nearly 3-year-old son, Samantha.
