Catholics are currently celebrating the period of Lent, which lasts forty days and is a call to renewal of life and inner conversion. For the faithful, every Friday is a day of penance, during which there is strict fasting and abstinence from meat. In addition, the basic restriction during Lent is the ban on organizing events. Catholics should not play, dance or sing loudly. However, they can meet with friends – the only thing is to celebrate loudly, because this period should be a time of reflection and penance.
In recent days, there has been a lot of discussion in various circles about whether Lent is actually a time when you cannot party. As you can see, many people do not comply with this prohibition. However, the family is able to skillfully recall family traditions and at the same time measure things appropriately with their eyes. And this is how unnecessary conflicts arise. The proof of these words is the story of our reader, Mrs. Natalia, who hears one thing from her grandmother every year.
Lent and fun as a reason for disputes? The grandmother couldn’t stand it and chased her granddaughter
“I’m less than 22 years old and I come from a very Catholic family. When I moved to Krakow to study, I rarely went to my home village near OstrĂ³da. And it wasn’t just the distance, but also the family’s views. This Catholicism was too much for me. Well, I can’t say that I’m about to sign apostasy, because I pray every day and go to church when I can, but I’m not a staunch Catholic.
Last week I returned home for the weekend. Dad called the whole family to greet me. It was very nice. I talked about what’s going on in the big world and at the same time boasted about the successful session. And without thinking, I added that next week we were going to drink our successes with my friends. And it was with these words that I stuck a pin in my grandmother. She opened her eyes wide and screamed:
Child, the Lord Jesus did not eat for 40 days before his suffering, and you are going to a party during Lent.
I must admit I didn’t think about it that way. It actually turned out stupid, and even if I was planning to go out, I shouldn’t brag about it. It’s Lent and I should stop talking about parties and good food. It’s a time of repentance. Young people learn from mistakes and that’s it. By writing this letter, I want to show that sometimes it’s worth biting your tongue, especially in a conservative family.” Natalia.
