– Mentality is the difference – says Jakub Gierszał. When asked what he would bring from the German set to the Polish reality, the actor replies:
10 hours of work, because in Poland it is 12, and in fact sometimes it happens that when the shooting day is long, there is no time for regeneration, you have to get up in the morning after five or six hours of sleep and continue working.
Gierszał played Wolfram von Kamitz in the film “White Courage”. His character is a world-famous alpinist and mountaineer, conqueror of the highest peaks in Europe and the world, as well as the inventor of climbing technologies. At the same time, he is a mystic who believes in the theory that the Highlanders come from the old Proto-Germanic people of the Goths, great warriors who defeated the Roman Empire and settled in the area of the Tatra Mountains. Kamitz is a descendant of an old Austrian noble family and a member of the Thule Society, which strives to make the occupation mild for the Highlanders. He conducts racial research on the highlanders to confirm his theses, and when he meets Andrzej while climbing – one of the two brothers around whom the story shown in the film is based – he sees in him a climber who has equal talent. What else did Gierszał talk about in his interview with Gazeta.pl? Watch the video:
The character of Jakub Gierszał in “White Courage” is based on a real scientist
“White Courage” by Marcin Koszałka, which hits cinemas on March 8, is primarily a story of love and brotherly dispute. Elder Maciek (played by Julian Świeżewski) refuses to obey the Nazis and joins the partisans. The younger Andrzej (Filip Pławiak) returns to Zakopane after a long absence to – as the distributor describes – protect the highlanders from wartime destruction, and takes on the consequences of cooperation with the Nazis.
– The story interested me for three reasons: first of all, it touched on social taboos; secondly: Marcin Koszałka, who loves mountains, was supposed to be behind the camera, so I suspected that the Tatra Mountains would be an integral part of the story and would be wonderfully shown, perhaps like never before in Polish cinema; thirdly: Łukasz M. Maciejewski, with whom I had previously worked, among others, was responsible for the script. on the film “Najmro. He loves, steals, respects” by Mateusz Rakowicz – here I also had grounds to believe that the material prepared by Łukasz would be an excellent starting point for working together. And I wasn’t wrong, says Gierszał.
– My character was based on a real German scientist who researched race issues in Tibetan communities. This is another interesting aspect of this story and, unfortunately, still very topical – people are capable of doing a lot, including many bad things, in the name of ideology. They are able not only to do a lot, but also to endure a lot, to forgive, to justify, and even to love. We do not moralize, but show certain mechanisms that are still present in the world today – explains the actor.
