Akira Toriyama died at the age of 68. The artist was the creator of the cult manga “Dragon Ball”. His works resulted in a series of films, video games and television series.

According to The Guardian, Akira Toriyama died on March 1 from a subdural hematoma. The information was confirmed by Bird Studio, a manga production company founded by the artist in 1983. “We very much regret that this happened. Akira Toriyama was in the process of creating several works, he was very excited about them. He still had many things to achieve,” we read in the statement.

The artist’s career lasted 45 years and resulted in works such as the comic book series “Dr. Slump” and the world-classic “Dragon Ball”. It was these manga that made him recognizable. He created “Dragon Ball” for 11 years, and the series had 42 volumes. 260 million copies of the comic book have been sold worldwide.

Based on Akira’s stories and drawings, an animated series with the same title was created, on which the artist had the opportunity to work. In addition, the cartoonist also created characters for video games such as Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest. After the end of the “Dragon Ball” series, Akira began creating short manga. In 2006, he contributed to the creation of the Blue Dragon computer game.

The artist was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1955. He drew throughout his childhood and then worked in advertising – designing posters. At the age of 23, he took part in a competition organized by a weekly manga magazine, he did not win, but soon he started collaborating with the magazine “Weekly Shōnen Jump”. In 1978, he published his first work titled “Wonder Island”.

Akira Toriyama not only played a key role in the history of Japanese comics, but became one of the most popular artists of this trend in the world.
