Otosclerosis is a progressive disease of the bony labyrinth. As time passes, the patient’s hearing gets worse and worse, and eventually he may even lose his hearing. Maciej Miecznikowski talked on “Dzień Dobry TVN” about his fight against the disease. Unfortunately, despite minor successes, otosclerosis can only be slowed down.
I can barely hear in my right ear anymore. I’ve already had six surgeries and I’ll probably need more. I suffer from otosclerosis. The bones in my ears are knitting together, so they need to be reamed. And after each such intervention, hearing becomes more and more dull. Beethoven had the same thing, at least that’s what I have in common with him. Medicine still cannot explain why this happens. If anyone finds the answer to this question, they will probably receive the Nobel Prize.
The musician wears a hearing aid that helps him function normally. I can also play concerts, but there are moments when the equipment fails:
I have a camera. This makes me speak louder and lean in closer. Suddenly, during the concert, my battery died and… If you play alone, there is no problem, because we have internal hearing. When we have to cooperate with musicians, the problem begins.
– he said. In previous interviews, he also admitted that as long as the camera works, the concerts turn out perfectly. Problems arise in normal functioning because the timbre of some voices – especially women’s – is at the limit of audibility for him.
