There is no obligation to wash our curtains with festive cleaning. This magical time of cleaning up before Christmas is already underway, so it’s time to make our curtains snow-white. We know how to do it at home.
How to whiten curtains effectively? Soaking is important
The first rule that you must follow when washing curtains in the washing machine is to soak them in advance and properly. depending on the type of dirt to which the fabrics have been exposed, other measures should be applied:
- Yellowed curtains: soak them in water with baking soda, and in the case of greasy stains with the addition of dishwashing liquid
- Dusty or light curtains soak for several hours in clean water, change it if necessary
- colored curtains or curtains with colored inserts: soak in water with a little washing-up liquid to avoid discoloration
At what temperature should I wash curtains when we wash them in the washing machine? Always set this program
The water temperature during washing should not exceed 30-40 degrees depending on the material and color. We choose a program designed for delicate materials, and the shorter the better. Remember that a slight spinning is not prohibited, but the curtains will almost certainly need to be ironed afterwards. It is worth putting such a curtain into a special bag before washing, thanks to which we will also be sure that there will be puffs on its surface.
What to whiten curtains? Effective home remedies
There are several ways to whiten the curtains that our mothers and grandmothers have already used. Here they are:
- Salt – Four tablespoons in 3 liters of water. We mix thoroughly and soak previously washed curtains in such a solution. After soaking in salt, rinse them thoroughly and hang them to dry
- Egg shells – the oldest known method. Put the shells in a linen bag and put them in the washing machine drum with curtains and wash them
- Baking soda – for regular washing or for the final rinse, add a teaspoon of baking soda. Guaranteed whiteness
- Ammonia – Before washing the fabrics in the washing machine, soak them in water with ammonia, keeping the proportions: add 1 tablespoon of ammonia for 2 liters of water
- Lemon juice – Our curtains last longer if we soak them in water with lemon juice before washing. After washing, put it out in the sun. Lemon also helps get rid of the unpleasant smell of cigarette smoke, smog and street pollution
