I believe that television in Poland has become very outdated over the last eight years. Not only Telewizja Polska, which was politicized and directed its program mainly to a clearly defined group of recipients. But also private broadcasters, who, in my opinion, have been trying for many years to retain existing viewers rather than fight for viewers under 40 years of age, who increasingly prefer to use streaming services. Now, after the first episode of “Time for a show. Drag me out”, I can confidently say that something is changing.
Before the program, I explained to my dad what it actually was drag show, although these characters were not entirely alien to him. And it is a form of entertainment performed by drag performers impersonating men or women, usually in a bar or nightclub. Shows can range from burlesque-style performances to adult nightclub shows to all-ages events with singing and storytelling.
Actor, bodybuilder and tiktoker as drag queens. One participant stood out in particular
The program “Time for a Show. Drag Me Out” definitely focuses on the third option, where he and his mentors perform a “lip sync battle”. The first episode featured actor Michał Mikołajczak, athlete Marcin Łopucki and influencer Kamil Szymczak. In the next episode, more participants will present themselves, but each of the six heroes, thanks to the care of Drag Mentors, will try to bring out the inner Queen in their famous mentees. They will present the best duet on stage, which will turn into a competition for the royal tiara.
The presenter of the new show is singer Mery Spolsky, and the jury includes Michał Szpak, Anna Mucha and Andrzej Seweryn. At the beginning, we got to know the profiles of the participants and the Drag Mentors, who were professionals and one of the most popular drag performers in the country: Gąsiu, Your Stara and Shady Lady. The latter is also the host. Dad immediately noticed that the pairs were matched based on the closest possible physical similarities.
Next, we saw three performances, and before them a short report on the participants’ mentoring and their attitude to drag shows. We watched this part in silence, but the moments of the titular “show” clearly enlivened us. I even noticed that my dad was especially looking at the players’ legs, which he compared with those of the participants. When it comes to performances, his favorite was tiktoker Kamil Szymczak. – He was the most casual. As if he was actually a drag queen – said the 68-year-old.
I will even admit that during this performance, my father got up from the couch to better see the performance, which surprised me a bit, but also made me happy. He also noticed that Michał Mikołajczak, thanks to being an actor, also has a lot of ease in playing the role of Nika De Panterra. Marcin Łopucki, on the other hand, was the most tense and we liked his performance the least. However, I don’t have a favorite. I believe that everyone took on their new alter ego in the way that was most comfortable for them.
As for the jury, we both think that Andrzej Seweryn is the bull’s eye, as his appearance adds charm to the whole show. Anna Mucha and Michał Szpak, who until recently were mainly associated with TVP, give the impression that we can watch a slightly more open version of them in the TVN program. The actress is very nice and cordial, and the singer allows himself typical drag-style taunts and comments. Mery Spolsky was also equally expressive, but she was caring towards the participants.
There was one thing in particular I didn’t like. Dad is hoping for a change in the next episode, but other than that…
My dad didn’t like it, and Michał Szpak even upset him at some points. Especially when he started talking to Andrzej Seweryn and didn’t want to let go. I explain this by the fact that I am just getting to know this culture and its rules are slightly different. But what does everyone think about drag after the first episode “Time for a show. Drag me out”?
I realized that many people who think drag is perverted have blinders on. They don’t see that it is an art form that may be new to many people, but nevertheless has a large group of supporters. And you can’t judge someone because they like to express themselves in their own way.
Moreover, he said that he saw a similarity to the Polsat program “Your face sounds familiar”, in which recognizable people also play the role of music stars and have to reproduce the performances as faithfully as possible (vocally, physically and visually). But the show of the solar station is very ordinary compared to the pioneering (for Polish reality) TVN program.
However, just before the end of the program, he added that in the end he believed that two participants – Michał Mikołajczak and Kamil Szymczak were better than their mentors. When asked why he replied: – The mentors were very professional, which made them look a bit artificial next to their students. There was more freedom and ease in these participants, which may appeal to viewers more – he assessed. When asked if he would watch the next episode, he replied yes, but he hoped that Michał Szpak would no longer come to the table. – This was already too much – he concluded.
