This year’s awards season for “Zielona Granica” ends. On Monday, the film was recognized as the best film, and the director received the Eagle statuette for her lifetime achievements. She didn’t bite her tongue on the stage of the Polish Theater in Warsaw. He has reasons – despite the change of government on the Polish-Belarusian border, the situation has not changed and everything that PiS did in that area (push-back procedure, returning migrants after crossing the border again at the border crossing despite submitted asylum applications) – is still happening .
Eagles 2024. Agnieszka Holland sharply talks about power
When Agnieszka Holland talks about the “Green Border” and the situations that migrants have to face not only on the Polish-Belarusian border, she does not bite her tongue. During previous speeches, she repeatedly attacked various governments, not only the Polish one, for reacting too slowly and brutally to the migration crisis, which will only grow due to ongoing climate change and the uncertain situation in the world. During the Eagles gala, she allowed herself a few harsh words towards the current government.
On October 15, after taking power, the coalition put the problem on the Polish-Belarusian border aside. This means that all the abuses that took place there are still happening.
The government has changed to the one I voted for. I should be happy. Meanwhile, on the border we talked about, things are still happening that shouldn’t be happening. When border guards continue to torture people and show contempt for them, there is no democracy and no humanity. There is no democracy without humanity. If, given the dilemma of choosing comfort or values, we choose comfort, in the end we will have neither comfort nor values. The monsters who fight our brothers and sisters abroad will win, she concluded sadly.
She also spoke on the international situation. The migration problem does not only concern Poland. Crises equally affect southern Europe and the United States. The latter will decide this year who they will choose as the new (or maybe old) president – isolationist Donald Trump is leading the race:
We live in a world that is being ruled by monsters. Monsters already rule a huge part of the world. Honest and quite scared politicians stand against these monsters. We can’t be such scared filmmakers if we want to be more than entertainers. We have to face this world, because if fate has equipped us with talent and imagination, we have no right to waste it, Holland said to those gathered in the hall.
