The series “A Very British Scandal” presents the backstage of the infamous divorce case and moral scandal of 1963. At its center were the Duke and Duchess of Argyll: Ian Campbell (Paul Bettany) and Margaret Campbell (Claire Foy). The public dissolution of their relationship became one of the loudest and most brutal lawsuits of the 20th century.
“A British Style Scandal.” It’s going to get hot outside in January
When this widely reported divorce began, Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll, once considered a charismatic beauty and style icon, made headlines due to numerous accusations of counterfeiting, theft, violence, drug use and bribery. Ian Campbell accused his wife of unfaithfulness and made a list of 88 different men with whom she would have cheated on him. Some were not homosexual and never associated with Margaret, but Margaret chose not to question their presence on the list as homosexuality was still a crime at the time. The judge in the case concluded that Campbell was a “completely dissolute woman.”
One of the key pieces of evidence was the Polaroid photo, which aroused exceptional outrage and went down in history as one of the more famous episodes of the scandal. Written by Sarah Phelps, the series stars Claire Foy, Paul Bettany, Julia Davis, Amanda Drew, Sophia Myles and Richard McCabe.
The premiere of “Scandal” will take place on HBO GO on January 1.
