Weekly shopping is the norm in most homes in Poland. They usually take place on the weekend, as does the clean-up. Not everyone likes them, but somehow you have to stock your home pantries and refrigerators to have something to eat. Alicja, as always on Saturday, went shopping with her husband to the supermarket. Navigating between aisles and crowds of people and checking off items on the shopping list was not the entertainment they dreamed of, but it was inevitable. However, the woman did not expect that these purchases would be the last ones she and her husband would make.
While shopping, my husband’s phone was ringing like crazy. He tried to downplay it, but to no avail
Everything went as usual, Alicja tried to pack every product on the list into the trolley as quickly as possible. At one point, someone passing by dropped a can of carbonated drink. Everywhere was dirty, Alicja also got hit, which effectively spoiled her mood. She reached for the tissues and tried to clean herself off when she realized her husband’s phone was ringing over and over again. The man tried to ignore him, but the third time the woman couldn’t stand it and indignantly exclaimed: “Why don’t you answer? If someone is calling like that, it must surely be something important.” My husband tried to downplay it, but when the phone didn’t give up, he answered it and disappeared between the aisles of the store very quickly.
She didn’t expect her marriage to end while she was shopping for groceries every week
The husband’s behavior was not standard. They usually had no secrets from each other, and escaping through the aisles of the store seemed strange and suspicious, to say the least. It occurred to the woman that maybe her husband was planning a surprise for the upcoming anniversary, but she couldn’t help but check what he was planning. She found him and heard fragments of the conversation:
Honey, I told you I’d tell her everything. Only you are important to me. He just needs some more time. Besides, I told you you can’t call me like that.
This was definitely not what Alice expected to hear, but she didn’t feel like arguing in the middle of the store. She returned to the shopping cart and started finding the missing products from the list. When the man returned, he smiled broadly and admitted that he had forgotten about the surprise party for his work colleague. That’s why he took some chocolates and suggested looking for wine. He lied without blinking an eye. At home, he got ready for the said party in the evening and left. Alice still couldn’t believe her marriage was over between rice and noodles, but she knew she would never trust him again. She didn’t want to reveal that she knew anything. She was going to wait and change the locks after he left the house and not answer his calls.
It’s a pity that I won’t see his face when he comes back in the middle of the night and realizes that his keys don’t fit in the lock and he can’t call me
– she concluded the letter.
