The 96th award ceremony is fast approaching. The ceremony awarding the most prestigious awards in the film industry will take place on March 10 in Los Angeles. Competing for the award for best film: “Oppenheimer”, “American Fiction”, “Anatomy of a Fall”, “Barbie”, “Winter Solstice”, “The Blood Moon”, “The Maestro”, “A Past Life”, “Poor Things” and “Zone of interests”.
Which Oscar winner earned the most?
This year, the most expensive production turned out to be “Barbie”, which cost $145 million. However, the investment paid off many times over. The film grossed approximately $1.5 billion worldwide. “The Academy Award could cause a new wave in cinemas, and thus – further significant revenues,” analyzes Robert Błaszczyk, director of the strategic client department at Cinkciarz.pl.
As we read in the report, the Oscar award not only affects the prestige of the creators, but is also visible in ticket sales statistics for the awarded works. After receiving the golden statuette, it may increase by up to several hundred percent.
A good example here is “The Shape of Water”, whose revenues after winning the statuette for the best film of 2017 increased by 171 percent compared to the previous week. A year earlier, “Moonlight” recorded a 238 percent jump in weekly revenues, hitting the screens of over 1,500 American cinemas, although the week before there were less than 600. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” earned the most in American cinemas in the first week after its premiere – 72.6 million dollars. Then, for 10 consecutive weeks, it recorded declines of 20-50 percent, down to just under $2.2 million. Meanwhile, in the week after the Oscar was won and presented, viewers returned to cinemas. The film’s weekly revenue increased by 40 percent.
A similar thing happened in the case of “Titanic”, which also saw an increase of about 40 percent after the gala. Last year’s winner of the “Everything Everywhere at Once” statuette made record progress. In the first week after the Oscar night, box office revenues in the US jumped by as much as 84 percent – from $112,000 to $206,000. In the second week, the rising wave was worth 69 percent – from $206,000 to $347,000, and in the third week it reached its apogee, jumping by 273 percent – from $347,000 to $1.3 million – Błaszczyk analyzes.
The most expensive films with Oscars
However, Oscar-winning films are often quite a large investment. The first place in terms of production budget among titles that gained recognition and the main award of the American Film Academy in the best film category is taken by “Titanic”. The winner of the statuette in 1997 cost 200 million dollars, which is, according to the current rates of Cinkciarz.pl, nearly PLN 800 million. However, the investment paid off. The film earned $2.22 billion worldwide, or almost PLN 9 billion.
The second highest-budget Oscar winner was “Gladiator”. The production cost the creators $103 million, or over PLN 410 million. The film earned $451.6 million worldwide, or over PLN 1.8 billion.
